Funny road trip experiences

We’ve all had one….a funny car experience (I’m sure most parents understand the AAMI ad where the mother is getting up her children in the back seat 😉 ) perhaps you’ve tried to unlock someone’s car (instead of yours!), Maybe you’ve been like the poor family from “Little miss sunshine!” So, what’s your funny moment?

My family used to go on road trips constantly when I was growing up.

On one trip, we were on a the ferry to Hindmarsh Island in SA (back before they built the bridge) and because it was nighttime everyone had to stay in the car.
Halfway across the water, a HUGE huntsman decides to come out of hiding and runs across the roof inside of our van.
My sisters and I were all screaming, my brother was asking if he could keep it, my dad was laughing so hard he was crying and my mum was trying to catch the bloody monster.

On another trip when I was about 9, we were on our way to visit Great Grandma, which was a 12 hour drive. I was going through a Puggle phase (see photo) and I was wearing my baby puggle in a pouch around my neck.
When we stopped for a toilet break on the side of the road and well, needless to say, I peed on my puggle

I remember when Mum’s car lights wouldn’t work. She’d have to pick up my sisters at night & tailgate the car in front of her, just so she could see the road. *(I know! – why the hell did she drive like that at night?) I remember once, the car in front of her was freaking out, so it kept speeding up to lose the tailgating car with no lights on. Mum had to keep speeding up just to see the road. She was terrified at having to drive so fast! So stupid & dangerous!

They eventually got another car. The driver’s window wouldn’t wind up, so when Mum was picking up my sisters at night, she’d freeze. My sisters were embarrassed that Mum always came to pick them up wearing her dressing gown over her clothes, just to keep warm while driving with the window down in winter.

They’re not exactly road trips, though.

Background: husband works away week on week off so our 2 year old and I spend a lot of time as just the two of us.
My husband, my daughter and I were in the car a few weeks ago and hubs stopped rather quickly at some traffic lights and we all jerked forward in the car a bit. From the back we hear “oh s**t!”. Husband looks at me and says “we do that a lot do we?!”
We laughed so hard- and I’ve since been very careful of how I behave in traffic!

Yes, my mum got a new car and it was now just white with a beige top and sometimes she picked me up at the station after work and she always parked in the same spot. I got off the train and saw the car with some schoolboy standing near it and I just thought he was just checking out the new car.

I opened the front passenger door and got in gabbling on about how hot it was and how I was so tired etc etc and then saw the boy getting in the back seat looking weird. I then looked to the driver and it was a lady and a total stranger to me.

I profusely apologised and got out of that car so quick. I stood there looking for my mum who was parked further down the street waving madly at me. When I got to her, she said she wondered why I was getting in somebody’s car and was freaking out thinking I was being kidnapped or something.

Unfortunately, my mum bought a colour car that was quite popular with the brand.

From then on, when I ever got picked up by mum, I would tell her to wave from the front window so I knew it was her.

I was totally embarrassed at getting in the wrong car. I was 17 back then. I still cringe when I think about it even now.

Getting in the back of a ‘taxi’ in San Francisco to a terrified ‘driver’ screaming at us to “get out get out leave me alone LEAVE ME ALONE!!!”

Get out of the ‘taxi’ and realise that he’s actually a Chinese delivery driver who thought we were going to hijack him.

Oh gosh, that would be terrible at the time. Yes, I am sure he still tells the story about that one.

That is just hilarious Anne! What a classic! He probably still tells the story of when he was almost hijacked by a group of Australian crims!
