Capsule wardrobe

I’m wondering whether anyone here has a capsule wardrobe or similar? How did you do it?
I’m trying to create one as I’d like to have less stuff to look after and dress faster in the mornings, but it’s hard to know where to cut down.
I try have items that I can wear with 2-3 other items to make different outfits, but still feel I’ve got too much. Oh, and I live in Melbourne which has the 4 seasons, so there are bulky coats as well.
All in all it feels like I’ve got too much stuff and yet find it hard to find something nice to wear! Does anyone else have this problem or advice?

I so need this, running out of room in my small unit I seriously need to cull in every drawer and cupboard in every room. So daunting knowing where to start and finding the time to actually do it.

I really like the styling you blog. I’m trying to organise two mini capsules too. One for formal/business attire and one for leisure. I’m sick of having a wardrobe of clothes and still wondering what to wear. I haven’t got a big budget so I need clothes to go for a few seasons ( but changing accessories etc).

Sorry I’d dropped off the forum for a bit- work stuff! But I really liked your question about whether I get bored or not. I don’t- but I had a good think about why that is.

I think because I love everything in my wardrobe it’s no problem to wear it over and over. I also mix up my hair, makeup and jewelry or add a scarf to shake things up.

And everything is mix and match so I can rotate things that way.

Once the change of season has settled in (yep, it’s Melbourne!) I have a think about what’s in the wardrobe for that season and if anything needs replacing or if I feel like trying something new.

Most clothes tend to last 2 seasons at least- a couple of kids and a dog means that I’m not keen to risk too many pricey pieces. But I am wary of ‘fast fashion’ so that things will last reasonably well and I’m not being wasteful.

I’ve only ever had one person comment on the number of different clothes that I wear (because, really, how often do you remember what someone else wore yesterday or last week- or is that just me? 😉 and that was a positive comment about the quality and thought that I seemed to put into what I wear. That made me feel good!

    Keep us posted!

Thanks @2663anne and @Seashells, I’m keen to read Nikki’s blog as soon as I can. Sounds like she has been invaluable to you 🙂

@Dilettante your capsules sound well chosen for our variable city! Do you ever find you’re missing out on anything or bored by colours/style? How did you decide what to cull other than practicality?
I hope to be able to describe my paired down wardrobe soon 🙂

I’m a keen capsule wardrobe person. It was actually the way I always went about things so it just made me feel good to think it was an actual thing!

I’m in Melbourne as well so I totally get the problem of the weather! This year I have 2 coats- one formal, one more casual. Then I have 2 jeans and one skirt, 3 jumpers and a poncho. One pair of short boots (brown) and one pair of long boots (black), and one pair of casual slip ons.

I also have 2 mini capsule wardrobes- one for my job where I have to wear black, and then for the other side to my job where I don’t have to wear black but need to look a bit ‘formal’.

Interested to hear what you have in yours!

Yep, I’ll back up the above commenter in saying look at the blog Styling You:

Learn how to create a capsule wardrobe to simplify your life

Nikki’s full of tips on capsule wardrobes & the like + all her capsule wardrobe posts are in the link above. I have to admit she’s heavily influenced me when it comes to packing a capsule wardrobe for travel. I don’t travel with as many clothes, shoes, accessories & the like thanks to her. She’s also responsible for shrinking my wallet….she’s got good tastes!
