Why you need to wash your feet every night

How many of you thought that standing in the shower and letting the soapy suds drip down from your body and onto your feet was enough to get them squeaky clean? Yeah, me too. But word is that we actually need to put a bit more effort into washing our feet. And nightly, at that.

According to podiatrist Emma Supple from the College of Podiatry in the UK, we should be washing our feet as often as we cleanse our face and remove our make-up. Why? “Dirty feet spark irritation, can cause calluses to form, as well as more serious fungal, bacterial and virus infections.”

Right, I’ll be washing my feet on the regular from now on.

So, if your nightly (or morning) shower won’t cut it, how do you ensure your feet are properly clean?

First, start by washing them with an antibacterial soap and a bristle brush. This will thoroughly clean them, and the exfoliation will help to prevent dry, cracked heels and calluses.

Then, you need to make sure your feet are dry afterwards. Like, reallllly dry. Any excess moisture (especially in between your toes) can increase the chances of getting an infection.

As for extra ways to avoid ending up with nasty foot infections, apply foot cream regularly, let your feet breathe when you sleep (so no socks in bed!), and cut your toenails short.

Do you wash your feet properly? How do you care for your feet?
