Miley Cyrus' raunchy performance at the VMAs

Can we talk about Miley for a second?

I know that talking about it only gives the popstar the attention she wants, but let’s forget about that for just a moment.

So in case you hadn’t heard, it was the VMAs last night (MTV’s Video Music Awards), and they’re pretty well known for some controversial moments: Britney and Madonna’s kiss, Lady Gaga’s outfit made out of meat and Kanye’s interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech probably make the top of the list.

At this year’s VMAs, Miley Cyrus performed her song ‘We Can’t Stop’ and then sang ‘Blurred Lines’ with Robin Thicke. And this picture kind of sums it up:

The whole performance was pretty raunchy and definitely a far cry from Miley’s ‘Hannah Montana’ days, so it’s basically caused the Internet to explode with commentary (and of course, a gazillion memes).

There’s no doubt in my mind that Miley is continuously trying to make it very clear that she is not the picture-perfect, wholesome Disney starlet she once was. Way back in 2008 when she was just 15-years-old, she went topless in a photoshoot with Annie Leibovitz for Vanity Fair, and it seems like since then she keeps pushing the boundaries more and more.

There was the salvia (or marijuana) debacle, the pole-dance performance at the Teen Choice Awards, her penis-shaped birthday cake, the numerous provocative pictures that have found their way onto the Internet, her shocking transformation from balayaged babe to a peroxide blonde with boy-short hair. It’s almost like there isn’t a month that passes without another Miley story.

But is she trying way too hard to make her point? Like the more ridiculous her behaviour, the more out there her outfits, the more we’ll believe that she’s all grown up?

We get it, Miley. You’re not a child anymore. You’re an adult who can get all the tattoos that you want and you can grind up on whomever you choose and you won’t even get in trouble from your parents. You cannot and will not be tamed. But you don’t have to try so hard to prove it to the world.

The one thing I can say I love about Miley’s transformation? Girl knows how to rock a bright red lip like it’s nobody’s business. Kudos for that.
