Make or break makeover
Hi guys, Joh Bailey here, Head Stylist for TRESemme for ANTM. Last night was my favourite episode - the makeover episode! It’s so much fun to transform the girls from models in training to serious editorial contenders.
A lot of the time, you can really see the change in the girls. Hair is hugely important for a model, and we took that into account when we tailored each of their looks. This year we have a fantastic bunch of girls, but there were a couple of standouts for me:
Kimberley is quite the character, I love her fun attitude and she has a lot of spark. Her hair was holding her back more than the other girls – with that typical bleached blonde look (that was in terrible condition!) she was in desperate need of a complete overhaul. I wanted to take her short, and decided on a pixie cut as Kimberly has a longer face and fine features, so she can pull it off. The final element was the deep strawberry red hue, which helps her to stand out from the other girls. Fortunately she loved this look and I think the shorter cut made her feel more grown up. Kimberly is proof that a change is a good as a holiday!
Kelsey is one of the most classically beautiful girls. There was nothing too wrong about her hair, but nothing particularly good about it either. Her hair was very simple in colour and cut, so I wanted to give her a messier, textured, rock chick look. We kept the colour much the same but added quite a lot of extensions to give it more length and thickness. The main change for Kelsey was the blunt fringe, which I absolutely love on her! It adds an extra element to her ‘classic beauty’ look, which I think will open up more editorial opportunities to her.
Poor Sophie! She really wanted to hang onto those extensions and that platinum blonde. I love extensions, and we used them on a couple of the girls, but extensions when done badly look awful! Because Sophie was starting to grow her hair out, the line between the end of her hair and the extensions was much too obvious and was starting to look like a mullet, which we all know is never a good look. Also, her colour was much too pale for her features so we wanted to warm it up a bit. Sophie has an incredible face, and it was time to get that mane of hair off it, and let people see her face. She wasn’t happy when we finished it, but I think that after a few more episodes she will realise that it was a change for the better.
Who do you think got the best makeover?
