Bronzing Babe: Katrina Brown

We all know that a faux glow is one of the hottest accessories come party season, so we sought help from bronzing master Katrina Brown, owner of the Bronzing Boutique in Sydney’s Double Bay.

Brown spills the beans on how to properly prepare for a bronzed bod, tanning trends from around the world, and why her sprays are a little different to traditional tans.

What do you think people want most from a tan?

People that come to me for sprays are after a flawless, beautiful, even tan. They want a natural, or deeper shade of bronze, no orange tandoori tans!

When is the best time of the week to get sprayed?

It’s funny, in Australia, girls like to be tanned the day before they’re going out so that they can wash off the instant bronze layer before heading out. In L.A, i find that celebrities and most other people like to be sprayed on the day of the red-carpet event, so it’s funny to see how people differ.

Also, as a rule – Brides should be sprayed two days before the wedding to ensure that the colour is what they wanted and that it won’t rub off on their gorgeous white gown!

What steps do you need to take to ensure an even, streak-free tan?

Be sure to exfoliate properly the day before – this means thoroughly over your knees, ankles and wrists especially! It’s also important not to wear moisturiser, deodorant or make-up on the day of your spray, as the solutions won’t attach to areas where these have been applied as well.

Make sure you’re freshly showered and waxed or shaven to make sure application isn’t blotchy in those areas.

So Katrina, what makes your tans different to regular sprays?

I only use a selection of organic spray tans, so they’re free of all the nasties. I also offer a shimmer and fragrance shot option, where clients can opt for a shot of shimmer to be incorporated into their spray and/or a shot of fragrance. I offer fig, coconut, vanilla and a range of Chanel fragrances, which are a great way to perk up a regular tan.
