Beauty lessons you can learn from the red carpet

Ah, awards season! My favourite time of the year. Why, you ask? Well, aside from the entertaining ceremony, awesome acceptance speeches and red carpet fashion, there’s an endless stream of stunning hairstyles and make-up looks to marvel at. It’s every beauty fanatic’s dream! And this year’s Oscars were no exception. The best thing about checking out the red carpet glamour is finding ways you can rock the looks yourself. From stunning make-up to dazzling hairstyles, here are the red carpet beauty lessons you can learn from the 2016 Oscars, sans the highly paid hair and make-up teams.

Hair: Casual chic

Casual, effortless hairstyles reigned supreme at this year’s Oscars. Rather than super structured, typically Hollywood ‘dos, we saw some more achievable but equally gorgeous styles. From Brie Larson’s subtle half-up, half-down style to Heidi Klum’s casual bun and Alicia Vikander’s trendy top knot, simple is the new chic! To mimic these styles yourself, put down your tools; work with what you’ve got and add a spritz of texturising spray, a few bobby pins and you’re good to go!

Eyes: Metallic

We can’t get enough of the metallic hues we’re seeing on the runway this year – from dresses to hair hues and beauty looks. The Oscar’s red carpet saw Sophie Turner, Saoirse Ronan and Rachel McAdams rock gorgeous metallic eyes, each in a unique way. If shimmer isn’t your thing, opt for a more subtle colour (like Sophie’s muted platinum) or if you’re ready to go all out, then Saoirse’s dark silver smoky eye is for you! If you’re looking to recreate Rachel’s stunning shimmer then grab a metallic-coloured eyeliner to frame your lid.

Lips: Crimson

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: a red lip is always a winner! Not only does it suit every skin tone but it’s the perfect pop of sophisticated colour and it’s trans-seasonal. Darker tones of red were trending at this year’s Oscar’s red carpet and Rooney Mara, Andra Day and Naomi Watts made us want to raid our lippy drawer ASAP! If you want to rock this look yourself, opt for darker shades of red with purple undertones and make sure you find a matching liner to really make your pout pop!

Smile: Dazzling

Last but certainly not least, no look is complete without a pearly white smile. There’s no doubt that when your teeth look their best, you feel more confident to flash them when you smile, and a gorgeous, genuine smile will enhance any look. If you don’t have the time or money to spend on in-the-chair treatments, there’s a simple way to get that red carpet smile. Using an at-home product like Colgate Optic White Toothbrush + Built-In Whitening Pen will help to whiten your smile in three easy steps. The toothbrush is specially designed to remove stains and the built-in pen contains a gel that adheres to teeth and has the same whitening ingredients used by dentists: hydrogen peroxide. Vish Sarma, Colgate Technical Manager, tells us that, “Unlike regular whitening toothpastes, Colgate Optic White Toothbrush + Built-In Whitening Pen goes beyond surface stain removal to deeply whiten teeth. Simply brush, whiten and go.” Start using the brush and pen two days before your big event to enhance your beauty look with a glamorous, white smile.
