Fans of The Crown have been treated to a behind-the-scenes snap of Season 5 and a first look at Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal of Princess Diana.
In photos obtained by ET Canada, the Australian actress is seen recreating the ‘revenge dress’ moment, which immediately became one of Princess Diana’s most notable fashion statements.
It was dubbed the ‘revenge dress’ for a few reasons, namely due to the fact that Princess Diana appeared in it the same evening Prince Charles’ documentary aired. In it, he made a subtle confession towards his adultery with Camilla Parker Bowles.
The black off-the-shoulder number was made by Greek fashion designer Christina Stambolian and was reportedly received by the princess in 1991. Smashing all sorts of royal protocols (just like the beauty rules Meghan Markle had to follow), the last-minute decision to wear the dress to the 1994 event was also seen as a strategic move and one of defiance.
Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has already received plenty of praise from fans for her casting and uncanny likeliness to Princess Diana.
The actress, who’s previously known for her role as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, will be succeeding Emma Corrin to play the Princess of Wales in the final two seasons of The Crown.
“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one,” she said in a statement.
Unfortunately, we will have a while to see the actress in action, with The Crown Season 5 set to air on Netflix in November 2022. Other notable cast changes include Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizaveth II and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.
