All the products you need to prep your skin for fake tanning

The most important part of fake tanning isn’t the product you use, it’s how you use it. A hydrated, exfoliated canvas is the difference between a patchy tan that fades before you know it and an even one that lasts the distance. As a weekly tanner, I’ve tried my fair share of prep products, but these are the top ten I always end up coming back to…

Bodecare Detox Dry Body Brush

Body brushing has benefits that range from increasing circulation to stimulating the lymphatic system, but they’re also incredible at buffing off dead skin cells for a light exfoliation. Bodecare Detox Dry Body Brush has short bristles that work well with sensitive skin and is completely non-toxic. I like to body brush on dry skin before I pop in the shower as a bit of a pre-exfoliation before getting into the harder stuff.

LUMA Beach Beauty Body Oil

Body oils work best for tan prep when you start using them a few days out before application, to give your skin a long-lasting hydration boost. An oil like LUMA Beach Beauty Body Oil will deeply moisturise your skin, and we all know hydration is the secret to an even and long-lasting tan. Just be sure to stop using oil once your tan is on as oils can make your tan fade faster.

Weleda Skin Food Body Butter

If your skin is dry, you’ll need to call in the big guns to get it up to scratch for a tan. A body butter like Weleda Skin Food Body Butter is creamy and thick, leaving even the driest elbows and knees looking luminous. Hot tip: Put your moisturiser on while your skin is still damp post-shower, it will not only spread easier but penetrate further for deeper hydration.

Schick Hydro Silk Disposable Razor

Smooth skin is the ultimate base for a fake tan and the Schick Hydro Silk Disposable Razor features five blades that are designed to give an extra-close shave. The razor also has a water-activated serum that keeps skin moisturised for two hours after shaving. What’s not to love?

Waxaway Salon Wax

If you’re prone to ingrown hairs or just want your hair removal to last longer than shaving, you might want to try Waxaway Salon Wax. This wax heats up in the microwave to emulate the hot wax used in salons, giving you a professional experience without all the fuss. Formulated for sensitive skin, the wax is great to use on sensitive areas like the bikini area. Just make sure you wax a couple of days before the tan day, to make sure your skin has calmed down.

Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser

Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser is a God-send for those of us who regularly tan and need to get the old layer off before starting a new one. Instead of harshly scrubbing off leftover tan, you just put this foam on all over your body, wait a few minutes and wash it off with a loofah – easy!

QV Bath Oil

A long bath is a non-negotiable for me the day before a fake tan, the warm water opens up pores, making it way easier to exfoliate. QV Bath Oil has a clear non-greasy formula that will rejuvenate and hydrate skin. Just pop a cap full of the oil into your bath water and soak up all the nourishment while you kick back with a book and a glass of wine.

Milky Foot

Patchy feet are a dead giveaway that your tan is fake, so if you’re wanting a more natural look, make sure your feet are up to scratch. This one needs some foresight, as it takes a week or two to work. Milky Foot is a foot exfoliation treatment that removes hardened dead skin over the course of a few days, revealing fresh feet underneath.

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Luxe Resurfacing Body Cloths

Truly the best body exfoliant I’ve ever had the pleasure of using, the Alpha-H Liquid Gold Luxe Resurfacing Body Cloths uses glycolic acid to chemically remove dead skin cells as well as getting rid of the last of your old tan. Use these the day before tan day, giving your skin time to settle down.

UpCircle Body Scrub Coffee & Lemongrass

Sometimes you just need to go back to basics and use a good old fashioned body scrub to get your skin feeling smooth, refreshed and tan-ready. When looking for a pre-tan body scrub, look for one formulated with hydrating ingredients such as coconut oil, just like UpCircle Body Scrub Coffee & Lemongrass.
