The winter skin step you're forgetting

Think you’ve got your winter skin care routine at the ready?
Cream cleanser? Check!
Hydrating night cream? Check!
Super-duper cracked-lip-resistant balm? Check!
Sunscreen? Err….
Yep. That’s the one you’re forgetting. Just because you may not be hitting the beach in winter doesn’t mean you should be slacking off on the sun protection.
Why should I wear sunscreen in winter?
According to the Skin Cancer Council Australia, one in 19 Australians is expected to be diagnosed with melanoma before the age of 85. Australia is home to some of the strongest UVA and UVB rays, which can be harmful to the skin, even in winter. The International Dermal Institute discovered that those who wear sunscreen daily, even in winter, had 24 per cent fewer Actinic Kerasotes (the most common precancerous skin lesion) than people who applied it once in a while.
I wear a SPF moisturiser on my face, is this enough?
You’re not wearing a bikini, so why bother putting it all over your body, right? WRONG! According to the Skin & Cancer Foundation, a white cotton shirt only has the SPF protection of about 7. So even if your skin isn’t showing, it doesn’t mean the UVA and UVB rays aren’t reaching it. In addition to this, even if you can't see or feel the sun, it doesn't mean your skin isn't being damaged. Cooler weather, cloud cover and overcast days bring no refuge to the skin. Scientists are discovering that certain types of cloud cover can make UVA radiation worse.*
But I hate the heavy feeling of sunscreen!
Don’t we all? There’s nothing worse than spending 20 minutes of your morning routine trying to rub a thick white cream into your skin. Luckily, there are some lightweight option that are great for winter and even some that will double as a moisturiser, protecting your skin while leaving it looking young, healthy and smooth.

I just learned about the UVA/UVB rays that reach earth in chemistry class! UVC is extremely harmful and luckily our ozone absorbs it all, UVB burns and UVA causes ageing even in winter...yup the seasonal changes won't affect anything.
I want to try that Alpha-H suncreen! Currently using my Neutrogena 50+ one :)

Oops. I will admit that I'm guilty of not always wearing sunscreen. That's mostly cos I really hate the feeling of them in my face. But I got Alpha-H SPF 50+ in my Glosscars prize pack, and OMG wow I can quite clearly see why it won an award. It's awesome! No stickiness, and no awful white cast. Great stuff!

I have to admit.... I don't on my body :( I wear a SPF sunscreen/Moisturiser on my face. My skin reacts to most sunscreens which doesn't help. I am glad there are some lightweight ones on the market, I must try them out. Thanks again BH

I do tend to be a bit lax with regard to wearing a SPF 30+ sunscreen in Winter so thank you Samantha for reminding me that it is still very important. I have a Coles Sunscreen which I have been using but I'll have a look out for the lighter types of sunscreen available.

I do spend a bit less time outdoors in winter so I don't mind dropping my sunscreen from 30+ to spf15.

I'm guilty of skipping the sunscreen in winter, but I HATE the cold so I try to stay inside as much as possible. Surely that makes it okay? :)

I was just starting to wonder if I needed to skip this step now. I'll keep wearing SPF all through winter now.

I did know about UV rays in winter, however i never wear sunscreen all over, not even in summer. I figure that clothes are enough protection, though I don't spend a lot of time out in the sun. I apply sunscreen to arms/ legs that are exposed in summer, though I haven't bothered to do so in the cooler weather. I have been applying my physical sunscreen to my face as well everyday, regardless of temperature.

I still wear it in winter and I knew that the rays are still strong in the cooler months, but I admit I'm not always vigilant with it regardless of the time of year. I always wear SPF50+, no matter what time of year and would love to get my hands on one of the Alpha-H SPF moisturisers.

I tend to wear an SPF 15 on my body in winter and SPF 20 on my face. If I was going to be outside for a long period of time, I would opt for an SPF 30 though, although sometimes I do forget.. Naughty me
