Spring racing survival guide
Spring racing season signifies the start of leisurely days in the sunshine, cheeky afternoon cocktails, and a showcase of the latest summer dresses and strappy sandals. For some however, it can also mark the start of fake tan faux pas, accidental sunburn, bleary-eyed mornings-after, and the occasional alcohol-induced injury.
If that sounds like you, then read on, because we’ve put together a spring racing survival guide that’s guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling gorgeous, all throughout the racing season (even if your pick of horses never seem to win!).
Stay sun savvy
The biggest spring racing season sin is to get yourself sunburned on day one (or any day for that matter - last I heard, lobster red skin didn’t complement any outfit, and surely wouldn’t see you taking home a Fashion on the Field award).
If you’re going to be track-side during the day it’s important to ensure your face and body are fully protected from the sun – and yes, that means regular SPF touch-ups. My top tip is to apply a 30+ sunscreen all over your body before you get dressed (to make sure you don’t miss any spots), and to take a tinted moisturiser/foundation with an SPF along with you on the day. That way, every time you touch up your make-up, you’ll be protecting yourself from the sun too.
Try: Auscreen 30+ Sensitive Low Irritant Lotion, and True Solutions Tue All Day Moisture SPF 30+ Tinted.
Get your glow on (in a non Lindsay Lohan-type way)
Unfortunately, we don’t all have the time (or patience) to go through the meticulous rigmarole for which a perfect faux glow calls. But that doesn’t mean stepping out sporting Lindsay Lohan-style uneven, orange hued skin.
Simply purchase a temporary tanning product - unlike many fake tans, the formula comes out coloured, so you can see exactly which spots you’ve missed and which areas need more blending. It’ll dry in a couple of short minutes and washes off easily in the shower, so if you really stuff it up, you can just start again.
Help out your hair
Maintaining top looking tresses when you’re out and about can be tricky – especially if you’re not armed with the right tools. But before you rush out to find a bag big enough to fit your hairdryer, we’re not talking that level of equipment.
No, a single slim line pack of bobby pins and a miniature hairspray is all you’ll need to keep your tresses in check. They can be used to smooth flyaways, secure rogue loose strands, or even transform your hair from daytime casual to night-worthy chic.
Try: Scunci No Slip Grip Bobby Pins, and Cedel Firm Hairspray.
Say bye-bye to bleary eyes
It’s not abnormal for a day at the races to turn into a night on the town. But too many of these and your peepers will start telling tales! Keep bags and dark circles at bay by using your ring finger to gently dab on a cooling eye cream before you apply your make-up. It’s also a good idea to keep a radiance-enhancing pen in your handbag so you can brighten your eyes throughout the day.
And remember, toxins from alcohol can build up in your system and contribute to dark rings, so do your best not to go overboard on the drinking!
Try: Juice Organics Revitalising Eye Treatment, and Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener.
