Expert reviews: Beauty innovations

This week we’re all about clever beauty innovations. From a self-tan back applicator (hallelujah!) to an all-natural dry shampoo, here are our expert reviews of four nifty products we’re currently coveting.

La Roche-Posay Serozinc

bh’s Beth says:

I’ve been using La Roche-Posay Serozinc for about four weeks now and I’m completely in love! I usually avoid toners like the plague as I find them too drying, but this mist is incredibly hydrating. To save time, I’ve been spritzing it on in the morning before I brush my teeth. By the time I’ve finished brushing it’s sunk in enough to create a lovely, hydrating base for my foundation. It’s really helped control my skin’s oil production – I’ve still had a little bit of shine showing through my make-up by the late afternoon, but this is a dramatic improvement compared to the oil slick I used to have to deal with! I also haven’t had any breakouts, except for one that happened after I was forced to stop using it on a four-day holiday. The big can is a little bulky, so that’s my one criticism – it’s not particularly suitable for travel (especially if you’re flying and can’t carry an aerosol). That being said, I’ve experienced a record high amount of consecutive ‘good skin days’ since using this product. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

A’kin Dry Shampoo

bh’s Astrid says:

As a hair editor, I’ve tried my fair share of dry shampoos, and for the most part I’ve got to say I don’t love them. Controversial, right? Truth be told, I really don’t like that gritty feeling between my fingers, but at the same token, appreciate what dry shampoo can do for my locks, so I’m often very torn between having flat, greasy strands and volumised hair that I can’t bear to touch. Having said that, this dry shampoo really surprised me. The first thing I noticed was it didn’t leave white marks all over my head – tick. The second was how it felt. As I rubbed it into my roots, I didn’t shudder from that dry, grittiness feeling – another tick. Thirdly, it did its job. It absorbed the excess oil and left my hair looking F-R-E-S-H. And I love that it’s Australian made and owned. A’kin, you’ve got my vote!

Ardell Dual Lash Applicator

bh’s Sam says:

I’ve always been good at applying lashes on other people using just my fingers, but absolutely hopeless when it comes to my own. I was sceptical about this product at first and didn’t think it would make much difference, but boy was I wrong. It picks up my strip lashes so easily and I can get them in the right position for application a lot better than with my bare hands. But my favourite part is the angled pink tip. Whenever I would try to secure my lashes by pressing down with my finger, the glue would always transfer and when I’d pull my finger away, half the time my lash would come with it. But the pink tip is made from rubber so it doesn’t stick! This means I can press my lashes down firmly without any problems and they stay put all night. I definitely recommend this product to anyone who has experienced similar false lash problems.

ModelCo Self-Tan Back Applicator

bh’s Anna says:

My ModelCo tanning mitt is my all-time favourite tanning product. No matter what tan I’m using (a foam, cream or spray), it has never let me down. I use tanning mitts to death – my current one has a hole in the side from overuse! So you can imagine my excitement when the ModelCo back applicator landed on my desk. One of the most frustrating parts of living the single life is I don’t have a boyfriend to tan my back for me (the struggle is real), so Thursday night tanning can be quite difficult. But thanks to my new back applicator, I no longer have this issue. The material is the same as ModelCo’s regular mitt so it distributes the product really smoothly and without streaks (as long as you buff well). All you need to do is rub the mitt across your back as if you’re drying your back with a towel. I recommend doing it with your back turned to a mirror so you can spot any missed areas – no boyfriend needed!
