Are you ruining your metabolism?

Are you ruining your metabolism?

A lot of people blame age for slowing down their metabolism, but it’s not the only cause. Your metabolism is the process of turning the food you eat into fuel for your body, so if you’re continuously messing with your energy levels and food consumption, this can affect it in a major way. So if you’re guilty of any of the following, you’re not doing yourself any favours…

#1 Ad hoc sleeping patterns

STOP IT: Establish a sleeping routine and stick to it, even on the weekends. Many of us lack sleep during the week and then try to catch up by sleeping in on the weekends. But not only does this change the times we eat, but it also shifts the time our body needs energy. The more predictable you are each day, the more easily your body can fall into a rhythm.

#2 Skipping breakfast

STOP IT: Treat breakfast like the keys to your car. Nothing will start running unless you have it. Eating first thing in the morning fires up your metabolism. My tip? Imagine you’re not burning any calories until you eat and I’m sure you’ll be able to make yourself munch on something.

#3 Bingeing and restricting

STOP IT: Sorry, but you can’t eat nothing but kale and boiled eggs for two days and then go nuts with chips and ice cream later that week. Consistency is key to a metabolism that hums along nicely, so treat yourself when you want to, not on designated ‘fat’ days. If you have a little chocolate every night, you’re less likely to eat an entire block in one sitting.

#4 Only doing cardio

STOP IT: Mix a few strength exercises with cardio, like planking, push-ups and weights. Muscle is active tissue which has a much higher metabolic rate than fat, so the more muscle you have, the faster your metabolism will be. Now, that’s a reason to hit the weights room.

#5 Not drinking enough water

STOP IT: Every time you go to eat something, have a glass of water first. Staying hydrated will help your body to burn calories more efficiently, plus you’ll feel less hungry when you get around to actually eating.

#6 Eating a high-fat diet

STOP IT: Make small changes to your diet to decrease your fat intake and up your protein. The body takes longer to metabolise fat, whereas protein quickly becomes energy.

Has your metabolism slowed recently? Are you guilty of any of the above?
