5 healthy snacks for weight management

Think managing your weight is a tough task? Not so, says Zoe Bingley-Pullin, celebrity chef and nutritionist, especially if you’re armed with helpful tips and tricks to use on a day-to-day basis.
“We all know that the most effective way to manage weight is to eat less and move more,” says Zoe Bingley-Pullin, celebrity chef and nutritionist. “But there are smart food choices you can make that will help speed the process up without sacrificing your health.”
So, combine these snacks with three healthy meals a day (including the healthiest spices and healthy herbs) and regular exercise, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a healthier you…
TOP 5 HEALTHY SNACKS FOR EFFECTIVE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
#1. Good fats
“It seems counter-intuitive, but eating foods that are high in good fats will help you feel full, and, depending on what you use, provide a wealth of additional health benefits. Coconut oil is a fantastic staple as it makes you feel full without contributing to weight gain. You can add a teaspoon to a cup of tea or hot water, add it to plain yoghurt and use it as a spread, as well as in cooking or on salads.”
#2. Crunchy, crisp vegetables
“Up to 85 per cent of Aussies aren’t getting the recommended five serves of vegetables in their diet. Cut up a carrot or prepare a bag with snow peas, capsicum and cucumber for a refreshing, low-fat snack on the go that will keep you chock-full of important nutrients.”
#3. Protein
“High protein snacks are a good way to feel full between meals. Choose snacks that are free from artificial colours, flavours and sweeteners. IsoWhey Protein Pops have 18g of protein per serve, less than 1.9g of carbohydrates, and come in two delicious flavours – Choc Coconut and Cookie Dough. As they’re naturally sweetened with Stevia, you can also satisfy any sweet-treat cravings at the same time!”
#4. Fruit
“A piece of whole fruit is the ideal snack on the go. Apples are low in calories and rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, vitamin C and B-complex vitamins, as well as a small amount of minerals. Easy to throw in your handbag for an instant pick-me-up!”
#5. Water
“Often when our brain tells us we’re hungry, we’re actually thirsty instead. If you feel hungry, drink a large glass of water first and wait 10 minutes. You’ll keep your hydration levels up, and if you decide you still need a snack after this time, you’ll probably eat less.”

I've changed many things in my diet just recently not so i can lose weight but to be healthy. We don't eat fast food - just pizza as a family treat. We don't buy soft drink, instead we'll buy coconut water. For treats, we'll buy dark chocolate. We don't buy icecream, instead we'll buy pot set yoghurt. It's working really well in our family. Our boys get super excited over fruit/nuts/dried fruit snacks or creamy yoghurt with blue berries. It's also about balance, we don't rule out something completely. There's always lollies around here :)

I usually grab a piece of fruit - bananas and mandarins at present - and have almonds and walnuts on hand. If my sweet tooth is kicking up a fuss I have four squares of dark chocolate - a little bit naughty but oh so delicious.

If anyone knows how to pick a good broccoli I'd be interested to know, as I love eating raw broccoli with low fat cream cheese or dip but more times often than not I seem to pick a bitter tasting broccoli.

COconut oil is just 100 pure fat. Why not eat flaxeed, chia seed, walnuts, to boost brain power instead clog your body with unnecessary grease :P

And please avoid whey at all cost! It is so toxic that is banned to dispose in the environment as it kills everything, so it is evaporated and served to unlucky individuals who have no idea what junk this is

Great tips. I'm actually a little scared of the coconut oil idea though. Its so ingrained to avoid fats that I'm finding it hard to accept that some types of fat are actually good for us even when trying to lose or maintain weight.

You are on the right track. DO not be scared though just use common sense. 100% solid fats, try to eat that from the jar! Gross! ANd eat few nuts like walnuts (for brain power, omega 3), pepitas, brazil nuts ...full of antioxidant goodness, and vitamins. On coconut oil-science:

I have never been overweight, nearing 40 same weight as in 20s, lean. Secret: loads of fruit every day, 3,4 kg at least and some movement, not too much
