Sleeping in on the weekend could help you live longer

Do you get enough sleep? We all know that getting a solid amount of shut-eye is key for our health and beauty, but now one study is suggesting that sleeping in on the weekend could even extend our lifespan.

The self-reported study was undertaken by Stockholm University’s Stress Research Institute and published in the Journal of Sleep Research. It examined more than 43,000 adults over a period of 13 years and focused on their sleeping habits during the week, compared to on the weekend.

The study found that those under 65 who got five hours or less of sleep on weeknights had a higher risk of death compared to those who consistently slept for six to seven hours each night. However, those who slept for five hours or less during the week but then caught up with at least eight hours per night on weekends lived for just as long as those who consistently slept for six or seven hours a night.

“It seems that weekend compensation is good,” Torbjörn Åkerstedt, one of the author’s of the study, said to The Washington Post. Though he did caution that this was a “tentative conclusion” of the research. And he’s right, we shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.

Until more studies are done, the best thing we can do is still just aim for the recommended seven to nine hours every night. (Although I know I’m definitely having a big, guilt-free snooze sesh this weekend. For my health, okay.)

If you’re having trouble getting to sleep, try LUSH Sleepy Body Lotion or The Body Shop Wellbeing Deep Sleep Dreamy Pillow and Body Mist.
