An alarming study reveals just how frequently you need to be cleaning your yoga mat

A regular yoga practice brings us mental clarity, boundless energy and long, lean, bendy limbs (at least, we hope). But with the good, comes the bad. And in this case the ‘bad’ is downright disgusting.
As we enter the dimly lit yoga studio and call the four corners of our mat home for the following 60 minutes, it’s important to note that this ‘home’ is also potentially being shared with up to 100,000 different forms of bacteria.
Yes, that’s right. That cushy yoga mat you sink your face into as you perform downward dog is also likely the host to some seriously gross infectious diseases.
According to US surgeon Dr David Anthony Greuner, “making skin contact with a dirty yoga mat covered in germs and bacteria can lead to skin infections, acne, toenail fungus and even transfer of the herpes virus and staph and strep infections in susceptible individuals.”
Speaking to ELLE, medical professor Dr Robert Lahita revealed “a yoga mat is a perfect incubator for many of our skin infections, mainly because people sweat on them and they are rarely cleaned.”
Setting out to test this theory for themselves, ELLE actually performed a yoga mat swab and the results were, well, scary. Amongst the findings was a bacteria commonly found in people’s mouths, ringworm, Athlete’s foot, an infectious disease called “flesh-eating-step” and a variety of staph.
But wait, there’s more. Research carried out by EllipticalReviews.com revealed an alarming stat that mats used in a hot yoga class presented a staggering 25,533 CFU (‘colony-forming units’). In other words, eight times dirtier than a toilet seat.
Before you set your yoga mat alight and swear off the practice forever, it’s important to remember these studies don’t speak for your mat or your gym.
However, to ensure your next yoga class isn’t going to give you a flesh eating disease, we do recommend wiping down your mat before and after every use.

If you’re still skeptical, well you can always stick to walking outdoors or treating yourself to a nutrient-rich meal replacement shake to assist with weight management.

Did you use a yoga mat? Are you surprised by some of these findings?

I have a mat for Pilates. I haven't cleaned it yet. I've had it for 3 months but I'll be cleaning it tomorrow after reading that.

I have a yoga mat which I have only used at home which I have not cleaned... I probably should every now and then.
I do not visit the gym, I can only think about how gross those places are with all the sweat, etc.

I have a yoga mat that I've never cleaned, I'm not too worried though, because I've only used it 3 times, lol

I think it’s important to keep mats clean, that start to develop an odour from all the sweat and weekly they should be aired out

Oh yes, airing! And I get mine at the sun at times. Got my best mat ever years ago second hand and had a scent from people using it before. I aired it and sunbathed. Wiped with warm damp cloth. All perfect. Till this day.

How gross you definitely need to clean your Yoga Mat after every use. For your own hygiene and peace of mind.

I have my own mat and use a towel on top that grips - it was a gift and best pressie ever ! I wash after every use and never use the bolsters that are provided unless covered in my own towels. I can just smell the body odours on them - EEEK

I only use mine at home so I feel it would be safer. Using a clean towel over it is a great idea.

The mats at my local gym look disgusting. I bring my own and sanitise it with a spray . I also love spraying a room spray on it to make it smell lovely before my workout.

The findings are gross but I’m not surprised I have never done yoga but like anything equipment wise especially when it involves sweat I would be wiping it down for sure.

Gross. I was a member of a gym for about a year. Never again. 1. I didn’t do anything there I couldn’t do at home, and 2. Every single time I went, all I could think about was how germ covered every surface must be.

My gym have very active cleaners and even there are wipes to clean the bikes I am grateful that my gym does this and too many people come to the gym 24/7 from this the equipment needs cleaning especially with huge amount of sweat and odours. However not all gyms have consumers cleaning either and would turn me off with all the germs.
