If you’ve recently found yourself back at the gym after basically being one with the couch these past five months, you’ve probably wondered at some point, “how did I get so unfit?” After all, walking to the fridge between eps of Yellowstone counts as cardio, right?
Brie Larson gets it. In a new video on her YouTube channel, the actress admitted she hasn’t exercised since the beginning of quarantine. But rather than stress out about how much strength she’s lost, the 30-year-old is easing back into it – one sweat session at a time.
“My intention for this workout is to not throw up,” she told her Captain Marvel PT Jason Walsh during their first training back (which, btw, was done via Zoom).
“It’s been a while, so I want to take it easy on myself, be realistic about where I’m coming from, and enjoy it while my mind flips out.”
@brielarson
The duo begin to go through a no-equipment routine made up of a series of bodyweight movements. Think sumo squats, butterfly extensions and different variations of planks.
“We’re going to move through these exercises pretty quickly, and the idea is to keep yourself off the ground,” Walsh said. “We want to keep moving around so we can help integrate the muscles, turn them back on, [and] reestablish circulation patterns.”
As the workout progresses, it’s clear that Brie is struggling to push through.
“I can feel my mortality in a way that I haven’t in a while,” she says, looking red faced and sounding out-of-breath. She then curls up into the foetal position for the cool down period, which after her efforts, she definitely deserves.
@brielarson
It’s also pretty refreshing for a celebrity—especially one who plays a superhero—to be real about their fitness struggles. (Because, let’s face it, we’re all in the same boat post-iso.)
“It’s unclear if anyone’s actually going to do this workout along with us or just enjoy watching me struggle,” she wrapped up the video. “If you liked it, if you didn’t like it—keep your comments to yourself.”

How have you been keeping fit at home?
I take the dog for a walk most days. Our usual route is about 4-5 km. I would like to be able to go to the gym but I can’t right now for various reasons, plus the fact that they are all closed in Melbourne.
I was walking for a an hour every day when I wasn’t working but haven’t done any exercise since I’ve been working again, need to start again.
Quarantine? Does she have some serious infectious disease? eek! Nooo…hope it is nothing serious
Stuff always same for me. Will never change. Body does things and gets fueled by superb goodies. So all great! =D
I’ve been going to the gym quite often, hopefully it doesn’t close again!
I feel her pain. Just getting back into a gym routine here in very lucky WA.
She’s such a wonderful role model
I am running and still doing so
This is timely for Victorians back in iso.
My level of fitness hasnt changed due to covid….im just as unfit as I was before covid.
I’m still doing all the things regarding fitness that I did before covid because I don’t go to gym, I’m outdoors a lot spaced well away from any people and often I don’t see a soul – its my ‘me’ time.
I haven’t done anything different exercise wise but it’s the first year in a long time that I haven’t put on weight during the winter months.
It’s good that she’s being honest and sharing her struggle to get back into it. Good on her for being real and doing it!
My exercise levels have been in decline for years 🙁
Lucky I’m still motivated for the gym and working out with weights
My routine, consists of walking my dogs, and hasn’t changed.
I’ve gained some weight since covid. Hope I can loose it as easily as I put it on.
Excellent go Bree.
I used to be of the mindset that if i don’t go to the gym I cannot work out. Covid has forced me to prioritise exercise. 2019 I barely exercised (I just made every excuse to myself why I couldn’t). I had surgery in March and was so out of shape I’d get winded walking a few 100 metres. I started walking to aid my recovery and then we went into lockdown I made it a priority to exercise daily. There’s so much you can do at home too. I have some weights and a skipping rope. You don’t need any equipment really. You can do squats, burpees etc. You just need the right mindset. I feel great atm so it motivates me to keep going. Hopefully it’s a habit I keep going when life gets busy again post Covid.
I’ve marked Elvis Rose, a few posts below, as SPAM!
Making a time with a couple of neighbours each weekday and we have made a point of going for a suburban walk of about 40 minutes. Just have to remember which day we are up to as all of them end up being Blursday!
covid has lead me to snack more and become more lazy, hopefully when this is all done i will get back into routine
I found a treadmill was great for maintaining a certain level of fitness while the gym was closed – just a little fold up one.
It certainly was a tough time. When gyms were closed, I subscribed to an online fitness program.
My exercise bike is fabulous for keeping fit, especially when it’s too hot or cold to go outside.
She looks fit!
