Should I drink detox tea?

If you’re on Instagram, you’ve no doubt scrolled through your fair share of girls with envy-inducing bods promoting detox tea. They claim the hot cuppa gets rid of bloating, cleanses the system and sets them on the path to health… so naturally, we went searching for all the important information you need to know. Vladia Cobrdova, Chief Operations Officer and Wellness Ambassador for About Life, who also happens to be a qualified nutritionist, shares all the answers below.

What are the benefits?
Detox teas are a great way to cleanse the body. You may not wake up looking as slim, toned and radiant as the girls on Instagram (remember, there are filters for that!) but you will feel refreshed, re-energised and healthier. Plus the process of brewing and drinking the tea gives you a chance to take some time out and relax.
What are the key ingredients?
Detox teas are simply herbal teas, with a specific combination of herbs that work to cleanse the body and aid digestion. Vladia notes, “Dandelion is a great detox herb as it cleanses the liver and eliminates toxins from your body. Milk thistle is also a great liver cleanser.” Some other common ingredients include pau d’arco (for its antifungal benefits), nettle (for the skin), chamomile, calendula, fennel and peppermint (for aiding digestion).
How often should you detox?
“I believe we should detox seasonally. It’s a great opportunity to re-energise our bodies”, says Vladia. As we’ve just moved into autumn (and probably indulged in a little too much chocolate over Easter), there’s no time like the present to start. Combine detox tea with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, and reap the benefits.
While detoxing is a great way to kickstart the body, Vladia advises not to underestimate the importance of having a regular healthy routine. “My beloved mantra is all about being consistent – consistency gets you the results so it’s important to be balanced throughout the year rather than being on a detox once a year,” she explains.
Our verdict:
Detox tea is a great way to cleanse the body, relax the mind and get your health routine sorted (or even started). But you must also eat well, exercise regularly and practice self-care for optimal health and wellbeing.
Other nifty tips:
If you enjoy sweet and zesty flavours in your tea, Vladia recommends adding “lemon to alkalise the body and manuka honey for gut health.
“It also makes for a delicious iced tea – brew it and add some fresh herbs such as mint [and] fresh fruit, and your flavoured water bottle is done.”
Teas we recommend:
About Life have their own range of detox teas, based on herbs such as nettle and milk thistle.
SkinnyMe Detox Program is a four-week ‘teatox’ program, which comes with a range of tips and tricks from a team of nutritionists, naturopaths and personal trainers.
T2 Tea also have a detox tea blend to help cleanse the body, which has a lemongrass and minty flavour.
Have you tried detox tea before? What’s your experience with it?

Not sure this article has been researched well enough bh. Always be mindful of how impressionable your audience is.

I really agree here, my 17 year old saw this and asked me if she should be taking it :( I really wish you would pull this article BH, getting paid to accept SkinnyMe products is lowering your standing in my eyes - my husband is a specialist doctor and he is appalled too :(

Eww! These detox teas sound hideous to me! Dandelion and thistle taste horrible if you pull them out in the garden and accidently brush your fingers against your mouth. I would not drink any of these, just stay on a healthy diet. A little bit of chocolate at Easter is not going to hurt anyone. Just don't over do it. Have a bit of willpower!

Detoxing in general is just not for me. I tried it once & lasted 36 hours before returning to what I normally eat. Besides, I rarely drink tea & I'm a firm believer in "everything in moderation".

i love tea! Recently i tried one, did exactly as it said and ate healthier and the detox made me so sick! Massive stomach craps and headaches. I get it might be the toxins leaving but drinking all that tea plus 2L of water a day surely it wouldnt make me that sick. My partner did it also and he got awesome results! I guess its just the person as to whether it works or not

This could very well make some one sick with unknown allergens or a sensitive stomach!

I really implore BH to take this article down, or at least have a more objective and more informed health official give their thoughts. One of the pictures above, the 'SMT' one, is a 'Skinny Me Tea' advertisement, which is a company that has had customers hospitalised. Please, if you are thinking of trying a 'detox' tea, do your homework on what you will be putting into your body, and what any side effects will be. A lot of these 'detox' teas have laxatives in them, which is good if you are having a genuine problem, but if its just to lose weight, man that is an unhealthy road to be going down. I would hate to see impressionable young women and girls thinking this is the answer to all their problems.

Too true, i would have loved to see a more healthier approach such as a detox with green tea or water and excersise for a detox as that would work pretty much the same but healthier!

I'm a tea drinker and have had detox teas with the likes of dandelion and milk thistle..I think one that thinks drinking a tea alone will give you a miracle weight loss is false hope and is disappointment waiting to happen..A good detox is eating a good mix of whole foods, reducing your meat intake, increasing your intake of fruit and veg, reducing sugar and caffeine from diet and exercising. Those are the things that will give you the best results to make you feel good inside and out! Drinking various teas does have a therapeutic benefit and can help relieve stress, anxiety, reduce blood pressure and other health benefits.

I think you should just eat a healthy balanced diet so there's no need to 'detox'. Treats are okay if they're specifically treats.
You'll give yourself diarrhoea drinking that stuff.

I'm definitely not keen to try any detox teas considering some of the adverse reactions they have induced. As well, some friends first hand have tried them and the only thing they resulted in was frequent washroom experiences.....
Detoxes are not all they are cracked up to be.

If I was going to try any of the above I would opt for: T2 Tea and as always "in moderation" to me is key.

Detoxing teas are rubbish! There's no need to detox, we have a digestive system for that. Really don't like seeing this stuff promoted.

I think I'd retox as quickly as I detox! I'm going to stick to my smoothies, but I do like trying these teas when the mood strikes.

I enjoy herbal teas and quite like regular dandelion tea with a splash of lemon. But our bodies are truly amazing and detox themselves. If you are feeling sluggish I recommend eating clean and enjoying getting outside. Works wonders for the mind, body and soul :)

I drink herbal tea all the time and I think the benefits of herbal teas and other herbal medicine do not stop at detoxing the body. It is a case of knowing what herb is used for what but if you are in the know then there is a herb for almost anything - anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep difficulties, heart issues, concentration and the list goes on.

I agree with you Bellefleur. Call it “detox” tea and you can charge more, but most herbal teas have detoxing qualities - hydrate, and can help overall health. Peppermint, which can be purchased very cheaply in the supermarket, is great for digestion. Chamomile is a good relaxant. Rooibos is full of nutrients.

I've had dandelion tea before but it never occurred to me to view it categorically as a "detox" tea - by the way, I feel this is just slapping on a label on something that already exists. I prefer to drink chrysanthemum tea which I find really clears my mind and provides such an instant boost of clarity that caffeine can give you but without the crash later on.

Not something I'd be keen to try personally.. I feel the healthy eating and exercise that goes after a detox would have more benefits than doing the detox
