Cosmetic dental surgery: investigating Invisalign

So you need braces but you’re not crash hot on the idea of having a mouthful of metal. Well, thanks to modern technology, you needn’t have to.

Invisalign – otherwise known as invisible braces – is a teeth-straightening system comprising of a completely clear set of plates, specially fitted to your teeth to realign your smile. A modern dental revolution, Invisalign is virtually invisible to the naked eye, with most people unable to detect whether you are wearing it. Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering invisible braces…

Who can use it?
Invisalign treatment is generally suitable for anyone with crooked, crowded or spaced teeth. It’s also suited to people with dental issues such as overbites, underbites and crossbites. Your dentist will need to examine your mouth an assess whether you are a suitable candidate first, but in most cases, people in need of any form of teeth straightening will qualify for Invisalign treatment.

How does it work?
After an initial assessment has been made, a detailed mould is taken of your mouth. This is then used to create your personalised Invisalign plates, or invisible braces. The plates fit snugly over your teeth much like a retainer, only there’s no wire or obvious signs that you’re wearing them. Unlike traditional braces, the advantage of Invisalign invisible braces is that you are able to remove them at any time, which makes them ideal when eating and keeping hygienic and clean.

How do you take care of them?
You should remove the plates daily and brush from the inside out to prevent build-up of bacteria in your mouth. It’s also a good idea to soak your braces in warm water with some dental cleaning tablets a couple of times a week, to keep them sterile.

How long will it take to work?
Invisalign can take anywhere between 9–18 months to achieve results, depending on the severity of your dental issues. During this period you will need to visit your dentist regularly for several re-fittings. At these appointments, the dentist will reassess your teeth and create a new mould to fit the changing alignment of your smile.

How much will it cost?
The average cost of specially-fitted Invisalign braces is anywhere from $4000 – $8000, depending on your straightening needs. If your health insurance policy has orthodontic coverage, the cost of your Invisalign treatment should be covered. Government rebates are also available to taxpayers whose eligible net medical expenses exceed $1,500 in a year. Check out medicareaustralia.gov.au for more information.

Invisalign® treatment is a series of clear plastic removable orthodontic aligners that gently move patients’ teeth. An orthodontist or Invisalign trained dentist will be able to advise whether Invisalign treatment is right for you. You should always read and follow their directions for use. In rare cases, allergies may occur.
