Wage war on scars

If you look closely at the skin on your body, you’re bound to find scars of all shapes and sizes – and maybe even discover some you didn’t know existed!
Whether they’re the result of grazed knees in the school playground or stretch marks from pregnancy, scarring is part of the skin’s natural healing and repairing process.
Although scars are completely natural, some serve as reminders of certain experiences in your life that you’d rather not think about every day (does teen acne ring a bell?).
Believe it or not, the appearance of scars can be improved. Read on to find out how…
WHAT IS A SCAR?
A scar is a mark left on the skin following the healing of a wound. After an injury, the body tries to repair skin as quickly as possible, resulting in the overproduction of collagen and leaving behind a scar. Scars come in many different shapes and forms, depending on what caused them.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON CAUSES OF SCARS?
Cuts, scrapes and sporting injuries
Everyday cuts and scrapes tend to damage just the outer layer of skin, resulting in minimal scarring. Deeper injuries that affect the lower, thicker layer of skin usually produce a more noticeable scar as the skin’s collagen and elastin fibres have been damaged.
Surgery and cosmetic procedures
Studies have found that 35 per cent of scars are caused by surgery. Aside from the psychological trauma that can set in due to having surgery, the patient also has to come to terms with the scar left behind. The most common scars formed after surgery are keloid scars, which are raised and spread beyond the boundaries of the wound.
Pregnancy
With a fast-growing baby belly comes the possibility of developing stretch marks. A result of rapid weight gain, stretch marks cause internal tears in the skin tissue, and as these tears heal, they leave behind scars.
WHAT INGREDIENTS IMPROVE THE APPEARANCE OF SCARS?
Truth be told, scars never completely heal. So rather than willing them to magically disappear, your best bet is to treat them with a product that contains ingredients that work to improve the appearance of scars. Enter, Bio-Oil.
Packed with vitamins A, C and E and a blend of plant extracts such as calendula, lavender, chamomile, and rosemary oil, this liquid gold formula is perfect for soothing and healing scars, as well as promoting skin cell renewal. But the benefits don’t stop there – the formula contains PurCellin Oil, which not only ensures all the oil’s goodness is easily absorbed, but it’s also light and non-greasy on the skin.
When massaged into the skin using circular motions twice daily for at least three months, Bio-Oil works to reduce dryness, even out skin tone, and leave skin looking and feeling supple, smooth and revitalised.
Ideal for use on the face and body and suitable for all skin types, Bio-Oil is a steal at only $14.95 for a 60mL bottle. So, add another benefit of Bio-Oil to the list: your mission to improve the appearance of scars is easy on the purse strings.
Don’t just take our word for it - Bio-Oil is the product most recommended by doctors for the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Our advice? Make a beeline to your local pharmacy and get on your way to smoother and more even-looking skin.

I have stretch marks that have faded with age. Nothing I applied on it, including bio oil, worked unfortunately.

When I was four I slipped over in the bath and put my two front teeth right through my lower lip - I have a special scar of 'two teeth marks' under my bottom lip to keep me reminded of it! It's kind of cool because not many people have an imprint of their baby teeth under their bottom lip!

I have used bio oil for some scars from surgery above my eyebrow and on my nose, it has helped them fade. Vitamin E capsules broken in half and applied to the skin is meant to be good for scars as well.

I have a couple of large scars on my back due to spinal surgery when I was 13. I am proud of my scars as I wouldn't be alive today but for the surgery.

I've used Bio Oil on my legs for scars from insect bites. It really did make a difference to them. They seemed to disappear really quickly.

I haven't tried this particular brand but have tried other oils which had a small effect. I think any oil should make some difference to the skin but it may require longer usage.
