How-to: make your candles last

Whether it’s a first date or an indulgent bubble bath, good candles can add fragrance, ambience and atmosphere to a room. But they can also set you back a fair bit too! There are a few things you can do to make your candles last longer so you get you money’s worth!

1.) Store your candles in a dark, dry and cool place. Under no circumstances, should your candles be stored in places where they might heat up (like direct sunlight) because it might cause them to melt unintentionally.

2.) Always keep the wicks of your candles trimmed to about ½ cm. Keeping this in check means your candle will burn more efficiently and is more likely to last as long as possible. If the flame starts to flicker or is letting off a lot of smoke, blow out your candle and wait until it cools before trimming the wick.

3.) Tea light candles will last longer with this easy trick: before burning, remove the tea light from the metal container and lightly press the base of the container from the inside to form a small ‘bowl’. Replace the tea light and burn as usual. This will create somewhere for the wax to pool during burning which allows you to burn the whole candle.

4.) To help fragranced candles last longer store them in a sealed container. If they came in jar, replace the lid after every use.

5.) When burning your candles, try to keep them away from fans, heaters or a draft. This might cause your candle to burn unevenly, which means it won’t last as long.

When have you used candles to create the perfect mood for a special occassion?
