Fierce fashion week nails

Fierce fashion week nails

Manicures are often overlooked at fashion shows. It’s easy to get carried away with the clothes and celebrity sightings, but you’d be surprised just how much thought and creativity is put into the hands of every model, at every runway show.

Similar to the many extravagant fashion, make-up and hair trends sported on the runways, the nail displays are great for artistic inspiration and upcoming colour trends, but on occasion have to be toned down a little to be wearable in every day scenarios.

A great example is the manicure from the Pheonix Keating show at this year’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA). This nail look in particular was fantastically fierce and out-there, but we loved it all the same. Here’s how we’d transform it into an every day nail look:

Step #1: Shape

File your nails so that they still have a little length, but a nice rounded shape. (Square shaped and super long nails have the potential to snag on clothing and other materials, which is perfectly fine if you have someone dressing you, but impractical for anyone else who has to dress themselves in the morning pre-work rush.)

Step #2: Colour

The red hue of this manicure is incredibly eye catching and daring (I love it!), but if you’re after a more subtle and cooler colour, a blue-based red or maroon will also go seamlessly with gold glitter.

Step #3: Glitter

To make the glitter stand out, apply a gold polish to the tips of your nails before applying a coat of glitter polish.

Quick tip: if you want to recreate the triangle shape of the red polish, wait until the red coat is dry and then apply a stencil or triangle shaped outline before painting on the gold hue.

Don’t tone down everything!

Just because you’re toning down the manicure to make it a bit more practical, doesn’t mean you have to tone down your entire look. These nails would go perfectly with a red lip and flicked out eyeliner.  And of course the one thing you never have to tone down is a confident white smile, so make sure to use Colgate Optic White Toothpasteto ensure a consistent pearly white shine. It’s formulated with the whitening ingredient used by dentists and can deliver three shades whiter teeth after four weeks use.

*Gentle, lower strength hydrogen peroxide (1%) formula for everyday use.

**Individual results may vary.

Is this nail look something you’d like to try to recreate? How do you ensure your nails are practical but pretty?
