How To Make Your Own Coffee Scrub

Has anyone else become a part time barista since being in iso? As we’ve temporarily sayonara’d our coffee catch-ups with friends and started to make our flat whites at home, there has been one huge benefit: the leftover coffee grinds.

Next time you go to empty them out into the bin, DON’T! Here’s why…

Benefits of coffee for the skin

According to Healthline, there are four ways coffee can benefit your skin

1. Cellulite reduction

Caffeine is key to cellulite reduction, as it dilates the blood vessels beneath the skin and improves overrall blood flow.

2. Calming effects

This one may come as a surprise, as it does the opposite when ingested. But when applied topically, the anti-oxidants within coffee can play a role in calming the skin.

3. Anti-ageing and after-sun care benefits

Coffee can also contribute to the reduction of sun spots, redness and fine lines.

4. Acne treatment

Coffee has both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which can help combat harmful acne-causing bacterias.

How to make a coffee scrub:

What you’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup fresh ground coffee
  • 1/2 cup melted coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of sea salt
  • A glass, waterproof jar or container
  • Dry brush (optional)

Method:

Step 1: Combine ingredients in bowl

Step 2: Mix well

Step 3: Store in glass jar

Step 4: Before jumping into the shower, apply scrub all over body, or just areas you want to target. Massage in a circular motion with dry body brush, or just your hands.

Step 5: Rinse off. Be careful as the coconut oil can become very slippery on the shower floor as it rinses off.

  1. Love love! Just have a jug of it: fine coffee grind, virgin olive oil (just enough to bind things together), bit of cacao, dried and powdered orange and lemon peels (I saved peels from non waxed fruit for DIYs) and a touch of crushed cardamon. I use this also for my face, lips and body in the shower. So yumm.

  2. I don’t drink coffee but I do love the smell of it. Hubbys latest addition to his collection is coffee with chocolate overtones, and oh wow it smells amazing. I’ve instructed him to please don’t throw away the grind, and I’ll see what i can do.

  3. I definitely have lots of grounds to use, I like Yohanna’s suggestion for olive oil as I don’t have coconut oil. I seem to recall some discussion about not putting coffee grounds down the drain, does anyone remember this?

  4. I’ve made my own before + bought some, but I find them either (a) not grainy enough or (b) VERY messy. Cleaning up the excess coffee grounds out of my bathtub (aka the only place where I felt safe using my homemade coffee scrub) was an absolute pain in the butt. I’d rather use an exfoliating mitt instead – less mess!

  5. I make my own all the time, and love that I know exactly what’s going in to it. To this brew, I’d add some essential oils, such as Grapefruit, Juniper and Rosemary. These guys are terrific for the circulation, and help bust up those tiny fatty deposits.

  6. I used to really love coffee scrubs but they are one of the worst things to use, because they coagulate and clog your pipes. Scrubs comprised of things like sea salt or sugar are preferable, because they break down with water exposure.

  7. I’ve used a coffee scrub once and I loved it but hated that the bottom of my shower would sometimes stain if I missed bits of the scrub before I got out

  8. I am using this coffee scrub which has shown good results.

    Coffee and coconut scrub
This body scrub will exfoliate the skin and help reduce the appearance of cellulite. . Mix 1 cup of ground coffee ,or you can use organic coffee instead, in 1/2 cup of coconut oil. You can add vanilla extract if desired. Mix well and store in an air tight jar. You can sue it 2-3 times a week to get gorgeous skin that smells of coffee.

  9. A great use for coffee that’s gotten old in the pantry! (Hubby only occasionally drinks it, daughter sometimes and me hardly ever. I also bought a huge container of it by accident with the online shop so this is a great use for it!! I could make coffee and use the grounds up so will definitely be keeping this in mind)
