Warm weather worries – page 2

With the warmer weather comes an inevitable shift in our routines. Rosy blush makes way for brighter corals, plum varnish is tossed for tangerine and super-duper hydrating moisturisers are swapped for light oil-free face-savers.
We chatted to the experts in make-up, hair, skin and bodycare to find out why you need to change it up these summer holidays.

Hair

We ask the experts: Kam Huckins, Junior Styist at GALLO HAIR in East Sydney and Benn Jae, Schwarzkopf Professional Australian Hair Expo Award Session Stylist of the Year 2009 and Sophie Roberts, Head and Shoulders Stylist.

What is an ideal routine to get bleached, dry, damaged hair back in shape for summer?

Huckins says “It can seem like a long process when you’re trying to repair damage to your hair but by sticking to a carefully planned routine you will see the benefits. The main component of such a routine needs to be the use of both protein and moisture rich treatments for your hair.  Having specialised treatments when you visit a salon is a great idea but you also need to be doing treatments each week at home. Protein helps hair to repair and restructure damage and when you’ve got heavily bleached hair in need of care; it’s a vital ingredient. Balancing the strength of the protein treatments with a super nourishing cream treatment is very important as well.

Roberts recommends three key tips to get you back on track to terrific tresses:

1. Add a treatment to your routine once a week – the New Head & Shoulders Scalp Massage Cream is great for summer as it will keep your scalp healthy and restore lost moisture at the same time

2. Try and have a heat free day – It is also best to try and limit the amount of heat you apply – go easy with the straightener. If you need to use heat styling tools, opt to use them on low heat.

3. Don’t go overboard with colouring… summer is also a great time to ease up on the colouring and go for a more natural look.

How should you prep your hair for the beach?

“SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN! Just like we use sunscreen on our skin we need the same to protect our hair from the awful effect from UV rays. Schwarzkopf Professional’s BC Bonacure Color Save Spray Conditioner is a two-phase spray where the White Phase conditions and also contains UV filters that will screen the effects of the sun from your hair. The Pink Phase contains Hydrolysed Wheat Protein and Panthenol to give additional moisture and care.” says Jae.

Roberts recommends, “Take a hat, that way you will limit the sun exposure to your locks, also make sure that when you get home you wash your hair with a cleansing shampoo to get rid of any salt etc. Applying a small amount of sunscreen is also not a bad idea, just make sure you wash it out when you get home.”

What changes to your hair care routine should be made now that we’re coming into summer?

Jae says “Your shampoo and conditioner is the most important. As me move into more humid temperatures it’s really important to nail your hair care routine so you soft looks will be ready for the ‘outdoor season’. Try using Schwarzkopf Professional’s SEAH HAIRSPA Lotus Bath Shampoo and Conditioning Spray. It contains Aloe Vera which refreshes and balances the hair while Pro Vitamin B5 complex will preserve the moisture content for those summer days.” Huckins adds, “As summer approaches and we spend more time outdoors, people need to be aware that just as we protect our skin from the sun’s rays, we need also protect our hair.  Using ‘leave-in’ products that protect against UV damage are essential steps in anyone’s summer hair regime.  Regular moisture-boosting treatments than can be done at home, as well as when you visit a salon, are also a great way to help hair recuperate”, says Huckins.
