The sun goddess

The look

• Think of your skin glimmering under a seaside sunset. Don’t try to change the colour of your complexion with bronzer (that’s what fake tan does), work to enhance it with subtle sunlight.
• For a natural, healthy radiance, apply bronzer to the places that would naturally catch the sun, like your cheeks, forehead, shoulders and décolleté.
• To put a chic spin on summer, switch blush for bronzer and sharpen your cheekbones with a glamorously faux glow.
• When choosing your best bronzer, consider which type of make-up usually works for your skin and the final finish you want. Powders are very versatile but if you’re going for a glistening, dewy effect, a gel, lotion or cream might be better.

Make-up artist’s notes

David McConnell, CEO and head make-up maestro at Gorgeous Cosmetics tells you his techniques for creating a golden goddess glow:

For all over healthy radiance

“Always use a large, soft powder brush to apply bronzing powder. I prefer a brush with natural hair (try a sable brush) because these have cuticles that help to hold the bronzing powder well and release it evenly as you dust over your skin.

“I also prefer pressed powder bronzer to loose powder. These tend to release colour more evenly and slowly, allowing better control of the amount of product on your brush. The application then ends up more natural-looking and even.

“The best way to apply bronzer is in a circular motion. Remember the old rule: less is more! Start with a light application, building it gradually until you reach your desired shade of sun-kissed tan. And don’t forget your neck and décolletage.”

How to define your cheekbones

“This is as easy as applying blush. Use a blush brush instead of your large powder brush as these are generally smaller and a little firmer, letting you achieve more precise definition.

“First, find your cheekbones with your fingers. To bring them out, apply bronzer along the bottom ‘rim’ of the bone and then bring it up onto your apple in a move I call ‘the lazy J’. This creates quite strong definition. If you want to soften the look, round out the colour on your apples.”

Contouring and camouflaging your features

“To disguise a long or wide nose, concentrate your application on the cheeks, jaw line and forehead. This will take the focus away from the nose.

“To make your face look longer or less round, apply bronzer to the contour of your cheekbone and along your hair line. Also shade the outer corner of your jaw line, but don’t continue towards the chin as this will give the face a rounder look. You can also elongate the face by shading lengthways along the nose.”

Wearing blush with bronzer

“Always apply your bronzer first, dusting it lightly over your entire face. Think of it as your ‘base’.  Then apply your blush just as you normally would, shading your cheekbones or applying it to the apples of your cheeks.”
