Beauty School how-to: Hollywood curls

Beauty School how-to: Hollywood curls

Who needs personal stylists and hairdressers-on-hand when you can create your own red-carpet-worthy Hollywood curls?

Emiliano Vitale, Creative Director of Sydney’s e SALON, leads the lesson in achieving the ultimate A-lister look.

1.) Mix a small amount of heat protectant with a volumiser (try Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique and Kerastase Resistance Volumactive Mousse D’Impulsion Amplifiante), and apply to wet hair before drying. This will guarantee your hair withholds the heat and retains its ringlets for longer.

2.) To ensure your strands start off in a controlled state, use a flat brush and dry your hair completely with a salon-standard dryer. I like the Jilbère de Paris Euro 4500 Compact AC Motor Dryer.  While your hair does not need to be perfectly smooth, more control at the beginning will bring about a better curl later down the line.

3.) Once your hair is completely dry, separate it into sections. Starting at the back of your head, subdivide your hair into square sections, taking smaller sections if you want tighter ringlets, or larger sections for looser curls. Keep in mind that size/barrel of the styler/tongs you use will also affect the size of the curls you create.

4.) Hold each section of hair directly out from your head and clamp a heat styler such as VS Sassoon You Curl, at the root of your hair. Turn the styler downwards (towards your shoulders), so that the outside edge of the styler is facing away from you.
5.) Slowly glide the styler from roots to ends in a downward motion. For a tighter curl, continue turning the styler under as you are sliding it along the length of your hair.
6.) Gently pin each just-curled section of hair to your head so that the style sets while it cools. Do not comb or run your fingers through them as this will separate and open the curl.
7.) Once you’ve completed your entire head, spritz your strands with a generous amount of finishing spray (such as Garnier Fructis Style Elastic Fix Powerspray), remove the pins, and you’ll be ready to hit the red carpet!

Teacher’s tips:

 – For longer lasting curls spritz each section with a setting spray just before using your heat styler.
 – To achieve more voluminous Brigitte Bardot-style curls, use a round brush when blow-drying your hair.
