Make your life a touch more Lush

Recently the beauty media were invited to an intimate lunch with Rowena Bird, the lady behind mega handmade cosmetics brand, Lush Cosmetics.
Rowena is the founder of this ecologically sustainable beauty brand, and she prides herself on adopting ethical practices in all areas of her brand – such as having very minimal packaging on most products, and none for those that don’t require it.
Lush also recently re-vamped their entire soap collection when they discovered that the palm oil used in its products was being sourced from areas where deforestation was at an all-time high, leaving a lot of wildlife - in particular, native orangutans - without a home. Since then, palm oil hasn’t been used in any Lush Cosmetics. All you’ll find in their wonderfully scented soaps, hair care and skincare is fresh organic fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils, and safe synthetics – so that you can ensure your beauty regime isn’t affecting the environment.
Another great initiative Lush has come up with just in time for Christmas is their fabulous eco gift-wrapping
service aptly labelled the ‘Lush Knot-Wrap’. Inspired by the Japanese art of Furoshiki, which literally means “cloth for the bath”, customers are encouraged to purchase a beautiful scarf, which is used to wrap the gifts bought from the store. The scarves are reusable and multipurpose, not to mention a perfect bonus to an already awesome gift! Why not pick up the Lush Creamy Candy Bubble Bar for that special person in your life, and top it off with a scarf they can use again and again?

Do you believe in supporting ecologically sustainable beauty?

I think it's great what Lush are doing as the palm oil industry is massive and gravely effecting the orangutans. Palm oil is also being used in our foods such as biscuits and is high on demand as it is the cheapest source of oil. I guess it also educates people to become more aware. I think more beauty products should speak up so consumers can make choices knowing that it doesn't have a grave effect on the environment. Keep the good work up and hopefully we can make a difference before its too late.

Definitely! It is so easy to be oblivious to where the ingredients in our beauty products come from. So when a company like Lush points out that one of the main ingredients it uses is being sourced from areas that are rapidly being deforested, and then decideds to stop using that ingedient, it makes sense to support them. I wish more companies were so open as to where their ingredients come from.

Ideally I would like to support ecologically sustainable beauty products. If there are good products I would certainly consider them, but if there is a product I need and is not available, I will go elsewhere. It is hard to know which products are truly ecologically sustainable. A colleague once told me that she investigated Body Shop products and found that some of their claims were not genuine. Whether it was true or not, I do not know. It is time consuming though to research all these products.

Ecological sustainable beauty products would be wonderful. I do like how lush also has a colour code for natural and man made ingredients in their products

Love the scarf idea!! If these products would be a bit cheaper I'd definitely buy them but seeing as they are double the price of what you get in a supermarket/pharmacy I can't afford any of it. I love the idea, sure, but unfortunately some of us stay at home mums have to be careful with our budget...

Well done to Lush. If more beauty companies jumped on board this bandwagon that would only make the world a better place! I definately support cologically sustainable beauty, there just aren't enough companies out there like Lush

It would be nice to support ecological sustainable beauty products if it wasn't for two things.
1. Problems with products from other companies that are comparable to Lush (ie the body shop) which caused skin irritation.
2. The price, I cannot afford to splurge that much on beauty products that I might not be able to use.

I have been supporting Lush products for many years, they stand for all the right things, and prove pampering doesnt have to come at an inhuman cost

It's good to hear cosmetic companies thinking of our planet when sourcing their ingredients.

I believe in supporting ecologically sustainable everything! Our natural resources are not going to last forever and we need to be looking for alternatives in all areas. I love Lush products and their commitment to the environment makes them even more attractive. I think the palm oil industry affects tigers too . . .

I love that scarf! Want!
I love Lush bath bombs. They are the best thing ever.
I'm really glad that they care about the environment, but I wish some of their products were a little more natural, like with less chemicals, and more organic ingredients.
Oh and to Roxymisha - The Body Shop has actually been bought by Loreal! It's ridiculous.

I try and support ESB as much as possible but I must admit I have not been vigilant about it.
It's nice to know that Lush is changing the way they source their product ingredients

Thanks for posting this article Liv. I love that Lush not only makes amazing & natural beauty products that really are great gifts, but that they stand by what they say and have altered their formulations when they realised the harm that comes from using palm oil. If only more companies could have a conscience when it comes to what they put into their products!! The amount of stories that I read about animal testing (involving incredibly inhumane handling and treatments to various types of animals) that cosmetic companies perform is ridiculous. So well done to Lush!!!

Great idea with the scarf wrap! I like to use ecologically sustainable products in all aspects of my day to day life whwere possible, not just in beauty :) I do agree that often to support such things the price is higher and a little out of reach for many of us.

I love the japanese way of furoshiki, this is a great idea for giftwrapping. Its a relief that Lush are being environmentally aware, which in turn will educate consumers.

must find lush store.....
i will go out of my way to buy and use products that are both environmentally sustainable and organic. I love the fact they no longer use palm oil. Its great to know companies are looking at the products and where the ingredients are coming from. Can only hope other companies will follow suit!

I definately love supporting companies that are doing the right thing by the environment especially in the beuty industry oh and of course Cadbury chocolates who've stopped using palm oil, I believe their should be more laws in place to protect habitats, makes me mad as there are other alternatives to palm oil and then they don't have to list the ingredient properly
