My husband and I are saving for a UK holiday. I put a large amount into a savings account each pay day, but we also put our coins into a moneybox each day to make it add up faster. My tip? Buy a moneybox with a counter in the lid - each coin you put through the slot is automatically added to the total amount, which is displayed on an LCD screen on the lid. You can instantly see how much closer to your goal you are, and that works as an incentive to save more.

I have read a good idea recently for saving money. Every time you get a $5 note, put it in a separate compartment in your wallet, and keep it. Very soon, you will enough $5 notes to buy something luxurious. I have not yet put this into practice, but think it would work very well.

I save all my silver coins. They go straight into my pick velvet piggy bank :) That's the easist way to save money I find. Once that's full, I'll transfer it into a bigger container. Every 6 months I'll put it into my bank account and it's usually over $100 :)

These are great tips! I just have one - stop spending for a couple of months unless it's a completely necessary purchase and then see how much extra you have for those couple of months. This is easy to do when you're not really in the mood for spending money anyhow but it's no good for spendaholics!

I try and spend below my grocery allowance. Any money left over gets saved.

I have been saving coins for a long time and find it very helpful. My gold coins for into a separate purse I keep in my handbag and use that money for small items so I don't have to break notes. I keep all silver coins in a money box and every couple of months deposit the money into my bank account which helps.
The $5 note idea that Secret Scents mentioned can work and I have tried it. But I found that I ran out of money too quickly so I just stick to the coin method.
I also put money into a special savings account (my 'emergency' account) each month.

My tip is buy online from overseas - luxe for less at it's best without having to wait nearly as long while you save!
I always budget and only X amount per pay can go to 'play money' on beauty, clothes, etc
X amount of money that needs to be saved always gets transeferred straight after being paid so that it is done and not tapped into

I always buy nappies in bulk when they're on special. We have a coin jar at home that I take to the bank when it gets full and spend on treats. You'll be surprised how many coins you can accumulate and make lots of $$$

I like to make a meal planner for the week, then you can buy in bulk for the week and save on wastage by buying food that you dont need or veggies that you throw out.

Some of my ways:
- Save 1 $2 gold coin every day (Get those tins where you can't open them without cutting off the top)
- Cut out coupons
- Request for samples (This way you get to sample a product before buying something that might not be suitable, thus wasting $)
- Buy only what you need
- Look out for sales and online deals ( Normally they are cheaper online. Jumponit, spreets, deals.com, etc)
- Eat at home ( Healthier )
- Write a grocery list ( That way chances of you buy unnecessary stuffs will be lower)
Of all, i think i very much love the gold coins method. I see it everyday, i pop one in everyday and it's getting heavier each day. This i know i'm definitely saving. =) Maybe if you like, you could get several tins, label them for the stuff you wanna buy and then pop a dollar in each day for each tin. Not sure if you guys will do that thou' but i would.

I've just discovered Aldi too Animal lover and it's great for everyday items! We are saving for a house and are working hard to cut costs wherever possible - taking lunch to work and making coffee rather than buying it definitely saves a fair bit. Also, we tend to hire DVDs rather than going out to the movies as much as we used to :) xx

aldi definitely is a great choice!! i love stocking up on snacks, the essential such as bread and milk and fruits as wel. trying to cut down lots of costs, but its really hard. trying to pack lunch for work every day is a challenge, i try to make variety, but try not to have ham for lunch though, i eat lots of canned tuna with veges. i try to keep change and even try to save like $5 every time i have them as groceries. I do all my direct debits every week and every pay i put $50 into my higher interest ac and not touch it at all

I used to spend way too much money on dinner at restaurants right after work! So, recently I've been able to avoid these little nights with the gals by doing a little afternoon tea get together with the gals at work, so that we would end up eating dinner at home, rather than right after work.

My spare change goes into a charity box, so I can't save up the "pennies". But I do wait for sales and I also try to get samples before I purchase. Even expensive products can be dreadful on your skin, and it's worth an extra trip to try them out first.

My partner and I have a container and whenever we have any coins we throw them straight into that. The last time we took it to the bank after 3 months, we had $500.00 towards our holiday. It sure does add up quickly.

Like you mentioned I come home and put my coins into my piggy bank! I'm also a massive bargain hunter! I'll only buy something that's full price if I really love it!

Great article Carli :)
I start the week with 100 in my wallet for petrol etc and put whatever is left at the end of the week (notes and coin) into a tin ~ sometimes its 10.00 sometimes it 30.00 ~ opened it last year before xmas and i had 1200.00 ~ enough to do all my xmas shopping !
meal planner is such a good idea ~ i never get around to it but it would save wastage :)

I have to agree with other people here, Aldi is great for saving money! Of course there are some things that I can't buy there but a lot of things that I need save me a lot of money! For example, a while ago I went to Aldi, bought about 20 items and paid less than $20. Then I went to Coles after that, got a similar amount of stuff and paid over $50! This is a HUGE difference! If Aldi had everything I needed I would definitely switch and not buy anything anywhere else... But sometimes you get what you pay for, if you know what I mean, so I'll never compromise on particular products..
Other than that, I don't really have any saving tips, I don't make enough money so everything I make goes on groceries, day care, petrol... My husband has a good savings account for all of us with a high interest and we opened up an account for my daughter, we put in $50 every month, so far she already has more money than me :) I never have any cash on me, I always use my debit card so no coins to put away unfortunately...
Plus, there are always things like shares, gold, silver, that kind of stuff.. Investments are really important!

I always shop for bargains, I even get my daughters to keep their eyes open for bargains, but I rarely take them shopping because there are no pennies left to save when I shop with them....I am not that stingy, I shout them lunch every 3rd weekend
