Best face forward

For some people facials are way down their list of priorities and I get that. I really do. There’s always something more important to be done than dedicate an hour to some self-pampering. But really, I mean if you stop and think about it logically, what is more important than taking care of yourself?

It’s not a luxury, not a nicety and it certainly shouldn’t be a rarity. It’s essential.

And as any beauty editor or therapist will tell you, a facial is a fabulous way to not only care for your skin, but to put the wind back in your sail. What’s more, there are express facials for women on the go, which means you can relax and revive in half the time it takes to do your weekly grocery shop!

Of course, before you book in for a facial it’s worth knowing that there are good facials, and then there are great facials. Jeannie Bourke from Venustus Beauty and Body Lab in Sydney, points out that “great facials are about so many things…”

Firstly there’s the consultation and this is where you get to air your skin concerns. And don’t hold back. Who else will listen to your skin woes with such enthusiasm? The consultation should be followed by a skin diagnosis, enabling the therapist to see exactly what type of skin she is dealing with.

Most skins will require a peel or polish to remove all traces of dead skin cells, grime, make-up and excess oil. This preliminary stage will also prepare the skin to absorb product.

A reputable facial will always incorporate massage as this ensures product is evenly distributed and given ample time to be fully absorbed into the skin. “A good therapist will perform a great massage to totally relax the client,” Bourke adds.

Facials are multi-faceted: they can include a variety of elements from extraction and exfoliation to massage and possibly a mask. So how do you distinguish between an average facial and a fantastic facial? Simple. The later will leave your skin looking noticeably radiant and, equally important, you should feel amazing – relaxed or revived (depending on the type of facial) and ready to take on the world!

What’s the most pampering treatment you’ve tried?
