Sunscreen for oily skin

Q) “I would like to know which is the best for oily skin: a make-up primer that contains an SPF or a normal sunscreen?” – Amrita, VIC
A) "This really depends on your environment and how long you spend outdoors. If you are in an outdoor environment I would always recommend applying sunscreen regularly, no matter what skin type you are. Look for sunscreens that have ‘non-oily’ written on the packaging if you have a concern with oil control. A primer that has sun protection may be enough for a very short period of time outdoors (that length of time will vary from person to person), however a primer that includes a sunscreen will help not only with the adhesion of foundation but also with needs such as oil control; whereas a sunscreen has been formulated specifically to protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun."
– Nicola Burford, freelance make-up artist

I would definitely recommend Bloom's sunscreen, it's perfect - not oily at all! I've never even thought about primers with SPF, so thanks for the heads up =)

Thanks for the brilliant question Amrita. BH have given some great advise and recommendations and I will be saving this article to my favourites as I have oily skin too.

Sunscreen is a must for me. I'll be sure to be on the look out to trial some of these suggestions. I didn't know they made primers with SPF! My holy grail product provides coverage, high SPF and oil control all in one. 100% Mineral Makeup with SPF is the best I have found so far.

I recommend Shiseido's sunscreen. AMAZING. My skin is actually BETTER from using it. If I have a pimple or red mark it is reduced when I wash my face after wearing the sunscreen. The price tag is a bit much but it lasts for months and months.

I have MAJOR problems with sunscreen. I'm just flat out allergic to anything with avobenzone or other chemicals in them. The only one I've found I don't have a problem with is Invisible zinc

I've got an oily T-zone & I'm really liking the sun sense anti-aging moisturiser at the moment. It looks a little shiny on the skin at first, but once it is rubbed in & the excess is blotted it is really good.

oo, what a fabulous question! for many years I have avioded wearing sunscreen because it left my blemish prone skin feeling shiney, gooey and heavy BUT recently my skin has cleared up HUZZAH!! so i have finally decided to treat my skin the way it deserves and to wear a good spf daily - and this list seems like a wonderful place to start :)

If I had very oily skin I would definitely use a powdered mineral foundation with built in SPF (I think Maybelline's is spf 18), that way I wouldn't have to worry about it clogging out pores and breaks out. I have skin that can be bit oily and normal moisturisers with SPF are fine for me

Great article, I don't wear sunscreen very often because I work nights and don't get out in the son too much but hopefully that will all be changing soon so this article is brilliant. It's been a while but I used to play tennis during the day and always wore sunscreen and always found it greasy so I'll be trying a few of these, thanks BH.

Not really into SPF primers... I don't use foundation much, so that's okay, I guess!
