Your secret weapon for summer

After all my excitement about the beautyheaven iPhone app, it’s no secret that I’m a bit of a closet techy-geek. I love anything tech-savvy that can make life easier, or my day more entertaining! So when I stumbled across the ‘SunSmart’ app from the Cancer Council in Victoria, I hoped I’d find something that would assist me in preventing my usual red-lobster status in summer.
I was in luck. This (totally free) iPhone app is your ultimate secret weapon when it’s sunny - or even when it’s not. On any given day this little beauty will locate you, wherever you are, access the temperature and the humidity, and tell you exactly over which hours you’ll require sun protection. Pretty nifty, eh?
Cooler still, the SunSmart app can tell you the UV levels and which hours of the day require more protection than others. So you can never have another excuse for being burnt to a crisp – even on a ‘cloudy’ day!

Do you think this is a handy tool in order to stay protected?
How do you normally keep from being sunburnt?

I just applied this to my iphone and where I live has a Max UV of 16 and this is why I am so fair - from the fear of sun! If and I mean if I go outside I wear a huge wide brimmed hat, sunscreen, long sleeve shirt and glasses and that is really only to hang out the washing! A new song needs to be created for that old "Slip, Slop, Slap" song, they just have to add Seek and Slide! :) Love this app.

Yes, I would definitely use this app, I'll check out what is available in my state! Sunscreen and my trusty umbrella are my ways of staying protected from the sun! I have just started trialling the Tri-Shave post shave moisituriser with sunscreen, after one use I can tell this will be a favourite product of mine, it is not greasy, and that is not common in a product with SPF!

I think it is a great app to have. I would definataly use it if I had an iphone because I work outdoors during the day. At work I always have sun screen on and I wear a hat.

I guess this app may make more of us, more aware, of the need to apply sunscreen consistently throughout the day as well as use other measures as defence against UVs
After realising that UV levels are pretty much extreme *every day* regardless of cloudcover and from 8:30AM to after 5:30PM(according to B.O.M) I always go to *extremes* myself :)
I slather on 30+sunscreen, cover up with tops with sleeves, wear sunglasses and a hat with a widebrim, as well as carry an umbrella with UV defence(purchsed from strandbags)

I know very little about applications at all as I have never owned an iphone, but from the above comments it sure sounds like it would be useful to those who do :)

Wow, what a great idea!! I could have really used this app, when working and playing outdoors (which I don't do so much now that I've graduated). Bonus, that's free! I also religiously wear sunscreen, hats and rashes. It's not worth the pain now or later to be complacent about sun protection.

That would be a great app to have on ones iPhone if I had one :) so useful for seeing at which time of the day UV is at it most extreme.
To protect myself from the sun I use sunscreen, clothes that cover most of my skin, hat, sunnies and more and more often I am carrying an umbrella with me to help with protection even more.

Thats a really good idea for an iPhone app... You see so many of them that are just useless.
This will help people to understand that you can actually get burnt when it's cloudy outside.
If I had an iPhone I would definitely get this app, as I burn very easily.

I'll be downloading this, just to continue being aware of the risks. I'm an obsessive sunscreen user but it will be a good reminder for those days where potential for sun damage is less than obvious.

Wow that's a cool app! If I had an iPhone I'd definitely get it :))
I just normally wear sunscreen anyway, doesn't matter if it's hot or not... maybe only on rainy days I don't wear any sunscreen, but then I don't really go anywhere on rainy days anyway....

What an awesome app, definitely need this! I'm always checking out the weather forecasts but this goes beyond that! I think a good idea is to keep a little sunscreen keyring on your keys for emergencies ;)

I apply my sunblock even before I hang out my first load of washing in the morning (often that can be quite early!). If I'm going to the beach I'll apply more water-resistant sunblock to my face before I leave home and I'll slather more on if I end up staying longer than expected! I wear a cap and sunnies too and I wear sunblock in the garden as well because it gets very hot out there too!

I think it's just better to always apply sunscreen everyday and make it part of your routine, no matter what the weather and season. Having said that, I'm not so great at it myself!
