How-to: get your skin checked

Staying out of the sun and wearing SPF every day is part of keeping your skin in tip-top condition and minimising your risk of skin cancer. However, that being said, it’s important to still get your skin checked once a year in order to ensure that nothing sinister is developing on your skin.
Between skin checks you can keep an eye on any changed in your skin. Keep the 'A, B, C, D, E' in mind when monitoring your moles...
A: Asymmetry - is the mole symmetrical? Problematic moles are generally not symmetrical in shape.
B: Borders - what does the edge of your mole look like? If the edge of your mole appears to fade out, it's much better than if it has a sharp, defined margin.
C: Colour - what colour is your mole? If there are more than three colours, or a predominantly pink colour in a mole then it's best to get it checked out.
D: Diameter - how large is your mole? If it's greater than 6mm in diameter or is noticeably growing, have it looked at by your GP or a dermatologist.
E: Elevation - is your mole lumpy or flat? The most common melanomas are flat and spread out slowly. Lumpy, more nodular melanomas do occur, but are less common.
Watch on above as I head to the Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia to have my skin checked by dermatologist, Dr Hanna Kuchel. And remember, covering up is the best protection, however when you are out in the sun it’s important to use a good SPF.
We like: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Lotion SPF 30 for daily use as it protects you from the sun without leaving your skin feeling greasy or sticky.
For the active among us, Neutrogena Ultimate Sport is a winner as it has a sweat, rub-off, and water-resistant formula, an easy-to-use spray application and the highest sun protection factor.
How often do you have your skin checked?
Have you, or anyone you know had skin cancer?

Great news about the raised moles being less likely to develop into anything sinister - most of mine are like that, but I'll still have them checked anyway. My Dad has pre-cancerous cells burnt off regularly so although he's never had a major problem, that's probably because he is diligent. I have the same fair skin so I should probably change my checkup frequency from 2 years to 1...

This is really interesting, I never knew what actually went on when you get your skin checked.

I know I should have my skin check at least once a year as half my life has been in tropics.

I really should make an effort to get this done more frequently, I think at least every year should be a minimum.

This is a really great informative article and vid. I also have the misconception that raised moles are more risky of changing into cancer. I have quite a few moles on my face and parts of the body which I hate.

I have never had all my skin checked only certain moles. I have had one cut out from my shoulder because my bra strap was rubbing it causing discomfort. It was not cancerous. I will have to though because of my younger days.

Fantastic vid, perfect reminder that we all need to take care of our skin. I do try to make sure i cover up and not sit in direct sun when i can help it. Have to make sure i always keep sunscreen on hand to reapply though.

My mum works for a skin specialist so I get checked once a year. Noone is safe when it comes to the sun and moles, it may just happen years down the track. If you are not sure always see your local doctor and if he is not happy he will send you to a specialist.

Yes, I have had skin cancer. It is really frightening as it spreads so quickly. This is an excellent video, very helpful to everyone. Thanks.

Thanks for reminding me to get my skin checked again!
I've never had skin cancer, but few of my friends have had cancerous moles removed (in time, thankfully).

I get my skin checked but have been told my skin is the rare type that doesn't get melanomas. Okay, that sounds great but I STILL like to be checked because I don't think anyone can be too careful - especially in Australia with my outdoorsy lifestyle.
It's always great 'peace of mind' to have had a check of any sort so I bet you felt great after your check-up Deb! : )
I don't know anyone in my family who has had skin cancer either but I've seen a neighbour with a chunk of skin cut out of his face. Now it's healed up he actually looks younger for it!! A bit of unexpected plastic surgery for him! His job is outdoors and he doesn't look after himself too well so I'm not sure what the future holds for him.

I've had one mole on my arm since I was a kid that I've always been slightly worried about but following the ABCDE method I just found out that it's likely okay! An old friend of mine has had 6 or 7 melanomas removed so I'm a little worried about mine so I plan on getting checked anyway just to make sure. This video sure made me feel better and less panicked about going. Thanks!

Hubby & I are both overdue for our annual check up. We have both been raised at a time when you where told to go out in the sun & get some colour. Being active outdoor types this is what we did & now the real damage is becoming obvious. My Brother in Law is always having these things cut out & even had to have his ears rebuilt. From experience I can tell you that all you really need is a good 15 minutes a day for your body to develop vitamin D. This help to convert calcium to a useful vitamin & stop things like MS. More than this can cause damage & of course not in the hottest part of the day. Always see your doctor for any new spots that arise & look suss even if you think they are just new freckles.

I have never been to a dermatologist--the only ways I get my skin checked is going to the doctors if I'm worried about a funny looking mole or anything.
