Jumping on to the forum earlier today, I came across a great thread from beautygeek15.
I loved the way she re-told the experience – it made me laugh out loud – so I decided I had to share it with everyone. No doubt a lot of us can relate!
“So, last night after shaving, G comes in to the bedroom looking a bit defeated, and tells me “I think you’re right”. Now… this could’ve meant a LOT of things in my head, but the one he did mean was the last one I expected:
“I think I need after shave balm”.
The reason this is a shocker is because G, in his own words, “doesn’t believe in male skin care, he’s a bloke”. No matter what I’ve said in the past he still thinks that moisturiser and scrubs are never going to be part of his regimen, and I’ve tried bringing up after shave balm many a time, singing the praises that it’ll help with the irritation and redness that G has after shaving, but he’s never ‘bought it’.
Last night, his neck was very red, inflamed and not so good looking, so I put a bit of my soothing moisturiser on him, and G proceeded to say that I could “jump on beautyheaven and find out what he should be using.” (I found that so cute - he knows I’m a bit obsessed lol)
So…here I am! Can anyone recommend a good after-shave balm (by good I mean one in the supermarket, no way in heck G will use a high end one, can’t afford it anyways)? Would greatly appreciate help!
Thanks girls :-)” – beautygeek15
Beautygeek15, here are a few of our top supermarket suggestions to get G started - we hope they help!
NIVEA for Men After Shave Balm – Replenishing
Gillette Fusion HydraSoothe Aftershave Balm
QV Man Soothe – Step 3
L’Oreal Paris Men Expert Hydra Sensitive After Shave Balm

Do you have any recommendations for beautygeek15? Have you had a similar experience with the man in your life?

I've had similar scenarios but can't say here in case he pops in and sees that i've spilled, lol! I can say that the suggestions above are good, and also that Natio have a nice after shave balm under $10 that mine likes.

I saw this thread earlier in the forums and had no idea what to suggest as an after shave balm. It's nice to see men getting into skincare. Skin is skin, whether you possess the Y chromosome or not. Back to the question, this isn't really an after shave balm but perhaps he can try shaving with something that soothes the skin, such as Dermalogica's Soothing Shave Cream. I got it in a swap and have been using it to shave my legs and it's great. It also won Glosscars 2009! Read reviews here: http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/products/18804-Soothing-Shave-Cream/review

that is a great story. I know most men find it hard to think the word skincare relates to them as well. I have been trying to get my dad to use some moisturiser since he works outdoors alot and the freezing wind has caused all these windburns on his face and his hands are looking pretty mangled for doing alot of lifting and cleaning jobs. I wish they would soften up a bit on and look after themselves as well.

So cute! :) I've heard the Nivea one is good. Also shaving with aqueous cream is a good idea - super cheap, and much nicer for the skin than shaving cream!

My hubbie suffered very badly many years ago until I found the perfect remedy. It's a bit pricier but worth every penny, Clarins Shave Ease Oil. He uses it before the shaving cream and after and he never gets a rash and for him to do all of this is amazing. And his skin is gorgeous, smooth and soft!

I defintely recommend the L'Oreal one mentioned above. My husband was given a sample a few years ago at a car show (ok, I did force him to go into the L'Oreal tent) and he hasn't looked back since!

Aww how sweet. My boyfriend is also a self proclaimed Manly Man but he regularly exfoliates and moisturizes now after 2 months of Australia's unpredictable weather and moisture stripping wind.

That's awesome :) I don't think there anything wrong with men taking care of themselves. In fact, if men did it more often then maybe they would get a bit more action too *ahem* ;)
I thought it was great when my husband listened to me and actually used some products, it made him look/feel/smell so good, he actually looked happier!!! :) Who said brainwashing was bad? :PP

hey - I've been using after shave balm for years ( ok - thanks to my wife) and my skin is never red or irritated after a shave... most aftershaves come in a balm so you can layer your scent - how SNAG is that!!

I back Nivea for men, affordable and really comforting, I have bought it for my 2 sons and although they too aren't all that much into product, they really use this and sing its praises.

BG, I can so relate with the bloke part, my man says all that stuff is for sheila's, until something bad happens and he's asking whats in my beauty cupboard to fix it, lol. My man don't shave alot, he's a bit like a lion king at the moment, but he reckons he's shaving it off tomorrow, YAY!!!
