Which came first – the pimple or the stress?

It’s no secret that today’s women are faced with far more stress than those of generations passed.
(Go on, admit it – I bet at some stage or another you’ve all wished you lived in Jane Austin times when a woman’s biggest worry was which suitor to pick for the upcoming ball!).
And while it’s great that we’re in a position to be responsible for our own finances, career paths, and relationships, the added stress it subsequently brings is unfortunately taking its toll on our skin.
The recent Neutrogena® One Less Stress Survey revealed that the everyday stresses experienced by women are resulting in breakouts. But the question is, which came first – the pimple or the stress?
According to the survey, 74 percent of women reported an increase in breakouts when they were stressed out, but the majority of women surveyed also revealed that they felt insecure or self-conscious when they had pimples or acne – kick-starting a ‘stress cycle’ that resulted in higher levels of stress and anxiety and, in turn, increased breakouts.
So if stress causes pimples, and pimples cause stress, what’s the answer?
Well, to start you can take some time out from your too-hectic lifestyle (there will be time if you make the time!) to give your mind, body and soul some much-needed TLC. Try these simple steps to stress less:
• Switch off your email, home phone and mobile phone for a while (the world won’t end if you’re non-contactable for a couple of hours!) and take the time to relax and unwind – totally uninterrupted.
• Try to go for a 30-minute walk each day. Regular exercise helps to circulate oxygen through your body, increases endorphins (the natural chemicals responsible for making you feel happy and relaxed), and does wonders for your complexion.
• Take 10 minutes in the morning and evening to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. It will ensure you begin and end your day with a more calm and clear mindset.
And while you’re on the road to a more relaxed lifestyle, you can also get to work tackling those stress-causing spots. The Neutrogena® Oil-Free Acne Stress Control™ range is formulated with special Microclear® technology, designed to penetrate your pores, eliminate impurities and help prevent breakouts before they emerge.
The range also contains natural soothing ingredients, such as green tea and cucumber extracts, to ensure that your skin remains calm and irritation-free while the products go to work to effectively clear your complexion.
Try: Neutrogena® Acne Stress Control™ Power-Cream Wash as an everyday cleanser, and Neutrogena® Acne Stress Control™ Power-Clear Scrub three-times a week to brighten and revitalise.
It’s also important to look after your skin from within. For a flawless face from the inside, out try these top tips:
• Up your intake of skin-friendly foods. These include fresh fruit and vegetables, fish (high in complexion-clearing omegas), and nuts, such as hazelnuts or almonds, which are perfect for that extra boost of vitamin E.
• Drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day to help eliminate toxins and cleanse your skin from impurities.
• Avoid smoking and excessive amounts of alcohol as they can dehydrate your skin and make you more prone to premature lines and wrinkles.
WIN! Let Neutrogena grant you one less stress with the chance to win $1,000 to get rid of your stresses. Click here for more details.

10 mins is such a long time when you are sitting there quietly doing nothing. It always feels longer than you realise, so it really does recharge your energy too. I really must start this up again (i've had the stress zits again after travelling so much for work recently and really stressing out about it)

I have started 30 minute walks each day and it has cleared my head and given me some time out. Worth a try for reducing the stress. Also, find that sitting quietly and concentrating on breathing helps too. Agree that stress brings on the dreaded pimples.

Lol, this article couldn't have come at a better time. I'm under a lot of stress, so alas I'm more prone to pimples so am a lot more fussy about what I put on my face, as certain products will make the problem 100x times worse.
Such great advise about de-stressing too. 10 minutes isn't a long time at all, if you choose something to focus on whilst doing your breathing exercises. Some tips are to take a walk and try to coincide your inhalations and exhalations by each footstep, but if it seems like too much to slow down, then try gently extending the steps and breaths until you get it to a nice slow pace. Of course there are many other ways to do breathing excercises, but that would make my post even longer than it is!
The typical sort of breath you should be aiming for to calm your mind would be to get your breathing to one inhalation and one exhalation every 4 to 6 seconds. :)

Sorry that should be, breathe in for 4 seconds, then exhale for 4 (or 6 if you can) :)

I recently purchased a Fitness First workout game for the Wii. It has short workouts that are customised to goals you set. I made one of those goals a flexibility one and I'm finding the quick workout every other night to be a real stress reliever. Especially now that it's too cold to walk around outside! That said though I'm super stressed atm thanks to a massive to do list and my skin isn't happy. This article is a good wakeup call.

Geez! No wonder I'm so stressed! I never part from my phone, I don't walk 30 mins a day and I don't take time to do some deep breathing. These are all do-able activities too. I really should take time to relax and de-stress.

Good article and tips, so easy to forget the simple things like "time out "are usually the best! This Neutrogena range is getting great reviews and I love their deep clean cream cleanser (Thanks for putting me onto that one bh!) so this acne stress control range sounds great for stressed acne prone skin.
