Make your morning routine more than mediocre

I believe that no beauty ritual should be viewed as a chore - especially those that have to be done once a day or more. Which is why the moment I looked at my cleanser and toner bottles and sighed, I knew something had to be done.
Now, I’m sure you’ll agree that every time you lay down for a facial or treatment, you’re automatically on an express train to cloud nine. Is it the candlelit surroundings and soothing ocean music? Or is it simply the care that the therapist takes with your face (even though she’s essentially just cleansing, toning, moisturising for the majority of the treatment)?
Either way, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve to ensure that your morning routine is far from tedious:
- Take your time. This means not just slathering a pad with cleanser and smooshing it over your face. My trick is to fill up your sink with warm water, add a few drops of a nice essential oil and take in the scent as you begin your beauty routine.
- Make it comfortable. Don’t rub your eyes with a make-up wipe. Rather, dip your pads into warm water before adding cleanser and pressing the pads over your eyes to remove stubborn makeup.
- Swipe, don’t tug. Your complexion is delicate – you wouldn’t see beauty therapists tugging at that delicate skin – so make sure you swipe your cleanser over your eyes and face in long, graceful motions so you feel as though you’re being seen to by a professional.

What is your trick to feeling salon-quality at home?

Great tips Olivia! I've never had a facial so I don't have any salon-quality tips for you unfortunately :( lol cleansing isn't a chore for me! I really enjoy it!

When I have the time and want to give myself a treat, I set up all of my goodies in the bathroom and give myself a facial by candlelight, after I put a facemask on I slip into a warm pampering bubblebath to relax while it all takes effect. By the time I am finished I feel extra special, and very relaxed. Using the best products you can afford also gives at home beauty treatments a real salon feel.

I love to take my time and give myself a full pampering session. It's best done when hubby isn't home and my daughter is asleep. Start off with a lovely bubble bath followed by some de-fuzzing, a cleanse, scrub & mask. Usually put a leave in hair mask as well with a towel wrapped around my head then buff and polish my toe nails and finger nails and sit on the couch for a while and relax whilst the hair mask and face mask do their magic :)

Thanks for the tips Liv. Its a good reminder. I know when I'm in a hurry I can be a little tough on my poor face :(

Good article reminding us to not rush when we can fit it in. I admit I rush in the mornings especially during the week. I cleanse in the shower!
I have samples of things that to me are extra special products and I save these for the weekends when I can take my time and have a mini spa session at home.

I am guilty of trying to get it over and done with. Especially when I'm desperate to go to bed.

I think the answer is try new things. Everyone gets bored with the same old skin care regimen including me so when I've finished using one product I use something else. I may come back to a product I love but I'll alternate it with new stuff.

I love that "Make it Comfortable" tip! I would never have done this before - dipping in warm water beforehand. I'll be trying this - thanks Olivia for the great tips.

Great tips Liv :-) I cleanse in the shower, but I find the hot water (especially this time of year) to be quiet soothing (turn it down to lukewarm for washing off my face though!), but will be making an effort to enjoy my routine!

Filling up the sink with water is wasteful with our water restrictions, why not set up an oil or incense burner nearby to get the same effect? I like massaging my face when cleansing and my hands when moisturising. It takes a bit of time, but that's a good thing sometimes ;)

I've only done facials twice in my life and both times I thought I died and gone to heaven :P It was amazing!! I don't have time for all that stuff at home, but when I'm really motivated I'll use a hot cloth on my face and I also have a foot spa that I wish I was using a lot more :P That's about it for me...

I'm always in a rush or I try to do two things at once as I'm time poor. Though, I love a scented candle for setting a relaxing mood.

In a perfect world we would have the time in the world to perform our routines!! But with work, kids etc we just don't have the time. I think I will pay a little more attention to my face and skin after reading this article. :)

I love a nice hair treatment. Walking out of the shower with the silkiest feeling hair is quite pampering. Oh, and I don't find cleansing ritual tedious, I actually enjoy it!

I have to say I don't really enjoy cleansing all the time, but I do enjoy cleansing in winter so much more when I have a shower. :)

I like the tips above Olivia, but honestly don't have the time to do that. I usually cleanse my face while showering etc If i do find the chance for a proper DIY I try to have a bath and do my full skincare ritual (cleanse, exfoliate, mask) followed with top to toe moisturiser and if im really lucky I light some candles and give myself a mani/pedi too! Love the idea of the eyepads to remove eye makeup etc, One thing I really need to do is be a little softer with how I touch, manipulate my skin while cleansing and moisturising.

I have mimicked a tip or two from having a professional facial, I tend to just use them out of habit now days, I enjoy my skincare routine so it is not a chore anyway :)
