Do you really need to wash your face in the morning?

It’s one dilemma that has beauties divided.

On one hand, many of us would rather have the extra five minutes’ sleep, while others love starting the day with that fresh feeling.

But is it actually necessary?

Dermatologist Ranelle Hirsch recently shared her view with allure.com – and you might be surprised by it.

“There’s really no reason to wash your face in the morning, especially if you thoroughly cleansed the night before,” says Hirsch.

“But, at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with cleansing the face every morning, as long as you’re not over-stripping the skin with harsh, drying cleansers. It’s just a matter of personal preference.”

So although it’s perfectly fine to wash your face in the AM, it’s not essential.

But what about that dirty bacteria lurking on our pillowcases?

Surely we’re just asking for grimy, clogged pores (unless we wash our faces, that is)?

“I wouldn’t really worry about that,” says Hirsch.

“It’s one of those ‘problems’ that isn’t actually a problem; if you’re breaking out, there’s likely a larger cause.”

Interestingly, the real reason to wash your face in the morning isn’t related to hygiene – but rather, whether you moisturise afterwards.

Why? Well, washing your face can make your face moisturiser a whole lot more effective.

“If you’re using a moisturiser in the morning, you need to splash some water on your skin first,” says Hirsch.

“Moisturisers are like Saran [plastic] wrap for your skin – they lock in dampness to keep you hydrated and glowing.”

And if you can find one with a good dose of SPF in it, you’re pretty much #winning at the game of life.

Here are seven of the best to get you started.
