Everything you need to know about beauty powders

Beauty powders have gained somewhat of a cult following in recent months, but what exactly are they, and what can they do for your skin?

We already know a healthy lifestyle and good skin care regimen are essential for a radiant complexion, however it may be possible to benefit your skin even further by taking supplements with select nutritional ingredients.

So, if you’re doing all the right things and still think your skin’s not as good as it could be, a beauty powder may be the answer.

We spoke to Shelley Atkin, a naturopath with beauty brand Qsilica, about how beauty powders can help support your skin’s health, from the inside out…

What are beauty powders and who are they suitable for?

Beauty powders contain specific nutrients to help support skin, hair and nail health. They come in powder form (as opposed to tablet form), which means they can be mixed into drinks or sprinkled over meals. Many of us already use topical skin care products to support our complexions, but Shelley stresses, “Nature has [also] provided so much in terms of antioxidants and vitamins that can have a positive effect on the health and appearance of your skin,” As the naturopath explains, “When you feed your skin on the inside, [it] will show on the outside.”

A healthy lifestyle (including a nutritious diet and lots of exercise) is still step one for optimum skin health, but research has shown adding a beauty supplement that contains more concentrated nutrients may provide added benefits, including anti-ageing. Shelley says beauty powders are suitable for anyone* interested in reaping these extra beauty benefits – to complement your topical beauty regimen*.

What sorts of nutrients do beauty powders contain?

According to Shelley, antioxidants are the “hero nutrient” to look for, to support your skin as you age. Why? Well, they play a key role in protecting against free-radical damage caused by environmental factors such as air pollution and UV radiation that may lead to the signs of ageing.

Antioxidants can be found in foods such as berries and green tea, but as Shelley puts it, “It’s unlikely that you’re eating a huge bowl of antioxidant-rich berries along with cups and cups of green tea [every day]!” This is where beauty powders can be beneficial.

When shopping for a beauty powder, Shelley recommends looking for “natural, therapeutic ingredients without artificial colours, flavours or added sugar, to ensure the benefits outweigh the nasties.” Qsilica Beauty Elixir contains the following antioxidant-rich ingredients:

  • Resveratrol – a Harvard Medical School study found that resveratrol (which is found in red grapes, peanuts, dark chocolate and blueberries), provides anti-ageing benefits.
  • Green tea extract – an antioxidant that can help protect against UV damage and can have an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Grapeseed extract – Shelley says this antioxidant “helps protect skin cellular integrity” and may reduce skin reddening caused by exposure to UV radiation. A study from Bioskin GmbH, published in the journal Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, revealed more evidence to support this.

On top of these key antioxidants, Qsilica Beauty Elixir’s vegan-friendly formula contains zinc, rosehip extract, kelp and silica, as well as vitamins A and E, to help support your skin’s overall health and appearance.

How should you use your beauty powder to get the most benefits?

For best results, Shelley recommends including a beauty powder in your diet every day as part of your beauty routine. A heaped teaspoon (1.5g) of Qsilica Beauty Elixir is all that’s needed “as it’s in therapeutic concentrations”. Simply mix the cinnamon-and-cacao-enriched, naturally sweetened formula with a touch of warm water to dissolve, “then add milk, or a milk alternative such as almond milk, for a delicious drink”.

You may also like to try mixing your beauty powder with natural yoghurt, sprinkling it over your cereal or your morning brekkie bowl, or adding it to a berry smoothie “for a super, antioxidant-enhanced beauty glow!”
