8 reasons to look forward to getting older

At bh, we talk a lot about taking care of yourself as you age. Self-care really is the key to a long, happy life.

And with this extra effort comes some pretty big perks. There’s so much to look forward to as you get older – ask my Nanna, and she’ll tell you: “Life is good.”

So, if ever you’ve wished you could turn back the clock, have a read of the below. There are some pretty awesome benefits of ageing…

1. You’ve got life experience

Whether you’ve raised children, read widely or travelled extensively, you accrue a wealth of experience and knowledge as you age. Twentysomethings can’t touch you when it comes to life experience. In fact, they would be well advised to listen to your words of wisdom and sage advice.

2. You can be more spontaneous

As you age, you tend to have the luxury of more time and resources to do what you want. From trying a new hobby to going on a spontaneous sabbatical, it’s the time to do something you’ve always dreamed of. It could be as simple as dedicating an entire day to an indulgent DIY pampering session, complete with your favourite Rubifresh Skincare Weekly Face Mask!

3. You’re having better sex

Arguably one of the best benefits of growing older is better sex! There are a few reasons for this, including having more experience under your wing, and more confidence in your capabilities. Don’t believe me? In a 2015 study published by researchers at the University of Manchester that surveyed more than 7000 elderly people, 85 per cent of sexually active women between the ages of 60 to 69 were satisfied with their sex lives. Among the 79-plus group, 90 per cent of survey participants were satisfied!

4. You have more mature relationships

As you age, you gain a better understanding of what you like and don’t like, as well as what you expect from relationships with friends, coworkers and significant others. The drama of high school cliques is laughable to you now – you’re all about honesty and, to put it bluntly, cutting the bullsh*t.

5. You have better perspective

When you’re young and inexperienced, the most minor life events can feel earth-shatteringly upsetting, but these days you don’t sweat the small stuff. So what if you got caught in the rain without an umbrella, or didn’t get invited to that party. These things aren’t worth getting worked up over!

6. You don’t have to deal with acne

One of the better beauty realities of growing older is that our skin doesn’t produce as much oil. Granted, this can lead to dryness, so a hydrating moisturiser such as SK-II Skin Signature Melting Rich Cream is essential. On the flip side, your trusty Proactiv® for Teens has done its job, and now you can happily pass on the recommendation to your daughter, granddaughter or any other youth you so wish to enlighten!

7. You’re less self-conscious about your appearance

Don’t get me wrong, you still take pride in your appearance, but you tend to feel more comfortable in your own skin compared to when you were younger. Whether you like to go all out with your beauty look like this glam gran with lashings of mascara, or prefer a subtle sweep of LACURA Beauty Duo Blush, you do your beauty look for you, and no-one else.

8. You’ve found your Holy Grail products

You’ve been in the beauty game long enough to have tried a significant number of products – and now you know precisely what floats your boat. Your top-to-toe beauty routine is tried and true, from your go-to St. Ives Fresh Skin Invigorating Apricot Scrub to your Pantene Pro-V Classic Clean Shampoo. Don’t get me wrong, you’re still open to experimenting, but you reap the beauty benefits of truly knowing what works for you.
