Ultraceuticals skin challenge – 30 day progress report: Acne

Halfway through October 2015, I noticed a drastic change in my skin – I think it was a mixture of a new cleanser, hormones and high stress levels. I’d gone from having next to no breakouts to breakouts everywhere – it was horrible.

When I was asked to try the Ultraceuticals Skin Challenge, I was hesitant. I didn’t want to introduce more products to my already inflamed and acne-prone skin. I immediately did some research about the company and was pleasantly surprised that it was Australian developed and owned, it did not use any harsh parabens or ingredients and it didn’t test on animals. My skin couldn’t get much worse, nothing was working and the products looked [like they were] of a high quality, so I said yes. Four weeks into the program and saying yes would have to be one of the best things I’ve done!

I desperately wanted to address my breakouts and pigmentation. You generally receive the take home products and an in-salon treatment during the first consultation, but due to the sensitivity of my skin I just took home some products. Initially, I didn’t know how much of a difference they would make but just two weeks into the program I noticed a significant change in my skin tone and I had less breakouts. My inflamed skin had seemed to calm down!

My daily routine was broken into morning and night. Each morning I would cleanse using the Ultra Clear Foaming Cleanser – a product that is so light and delicate but can remove all traces of make-up without stripping your skin. Every second morning I would follow my cleanse with the Ultra Clear Treatment Lotion, there was a slight tingle when applying the product but only due to the active acids. The feeling also dissipated really quickly. Following that, I would apply the Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ Mattifying every day. This would have to be one of my favourite products, it’s a sunscreen but feels like a moisturiser, it’s light and not sticky or oily like most protectants are.

My night routine would again consist of cleansing with the Ultra Clear Foaming Cleanser (double cleanse if I had make-up [on]) and then moisturising with the Ultra Hydration Lotion. Twice a week, I would sleep with an Ultra Clear Purifying Mask. I am in love with the at-home products, they are calming, easy to use and gentle on your skin but extremely effective.

I received my first in-salon treatment after using the at-home products for two weeks. It was a Mandelic Acid Peel which is slightly less gentler on the skin than the Lactic or Salicylic Acid Peels. The treatment went for around 10 minutes, there was no discomfort, stinging or burning sensation but I noticed a huge improvement only a few days after. My skin’s tone and texture was smoother and fresher-looking. There was also no downtime and my skin didn’t peel.

A new take home product was introduced following the in-clinic treatment. The Ultra Clear Spot Treatment is used to target minor spots appearing on the skin and it does just that. This is a powerful product and you only need small amounts, my skin slightly peeled after using it on my spots across the course of a few days but that’s expected.

I’ve continued to use my take home products for a further two weeks and my skin is almost back to normal, with no breakouts. There are still a few spots where my skin is repairing and the occasional pimple but overall my skin has improved dramatically. The products seem to not only target the top layer of my skin but the dermal layer as well. The tone and clarity of my skin has changed, I didn’t even realise I had [an] uneven skin tone but the difference that a month has made is amazing and the results are so visible.

It makes me so excited for the next eight weeks!! Thank you Ultraceuticals!

What I would like from this trial is clear skin without breakouts so that I can move on to treatments for pigmentation and acne scars. Most of the time I have active acne and it’s really difficult to treat anything else on my skin when I am battling pimples on a daily basis. One thing I have had trouble with is keeping my skin acne-free, not just initially getting rid of pimples. They always seem to come creeping back! I’m hoping my skin will be less congested and for my pores to be clear to absorb any future treatments.

My initial thought on the products was this looks like a promising cosmeceutical brand and I look forward to giving it a go. From the sleek, simple and elegant packaging, the power packed active ingredients, the research that went into developing the products and the price – I think Ultraceuticals produces high quality and high performance products. My only concern is that these products are quite pricey and being part of the Trial Team I have the opportunity to try it out with no cost, the price is one thing I would keep in mind when purchasing.

Firstly, my skin therapist is fabulous! She has a wealth of knowledge with a lot of experience and expertise. So it is reassuring to know I’m in good hands because initially I was nervous and sceptical about this experience!

My treatment product is the Ultra Clear Treatment Lotion, which I have been using each morning. I was supposed to use it every alternate morning but I forgot and have been using it every day without any adverse reactions. It is really gentle and even though it has active ingredients in it, it’s not harsh on the skin at all. Just a couple of pumps spread evenly on my face and I’m good to go. It absorbs quickly so I can apply my sunscreen and move onto doing my make-up for the day.

I enjoy using the Ultra Clear Foaming Cleanser which has a rich lather and cleanses my skin well without drying or stripping it. I follow up with my treatment product and wait for it to absorb before I apply a liberal amount of sunscreen (Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ Mattifying). There is also a spot treatment for any active pimples which I have been using twice a day. The spot treatment was like a concentrated version of the treatment lotion.

The one product that I didn’t get accustomed to was the Ultra Hydrating Lotion because within a week of using it my skin broke out and was clogged worse than usual. I think my skin was purging and the oil and dirt was surfacing up. I stopped using it and the breakouts settled and disappeared after a few days. After consulting my skin therapist she recommended the B2 Ultra Hydrating Serum and that is working really well – [it] hydrates my skin without pimples.

Initially, I had the Brightening Accelerator Mask for my in-clinic treatment. This mask is suited to dark skin like mine and is supposed to help [with] post-acne hyperpigmentation. To be honest, I didn’t particularly enjoy getting this done. For me, it stung a lot and my face felt like it was on fire! The whole process was not pleasant and I wasn’t a fan! There wasn’t any visible results so I felt like the effort was for nothing.

The last two treatments I have received at a fortnightly interval was microdermabrasion followed by an infusion mask. I much prefer this over the brightening mask. It wasn’t painful or uncomfortable at all. My skin literally glowed and brightened afterwards. I didn’t have any reactions or adverse effects; my skin wasn’t red or peeling/flaking. I’d say I’m better suited to Vita-Brasion treatments (microdermabrasion). The results are definitely prominent from the first treatment whereas the accelerator mask didn’t show a noticeable improvement.

In the last four weeks, my skin has improved dramatically with a visible difference; I was actually able to see an improvement within the first one to two weeks and it is progressively getting better each day. I don’t break out as much as I used to and the active breakouts I had prior to the trial have healed completely. I had several small pustules all over my face which are now gone and haven’t come back, which I was sceptical about. The tone of my complexion is also bright and more even toned, my pores look tighter and practically invisible! My face feels so much smoother and softer than before. I can also see my acne scars slowly fading which is what I would like to focus on next. The in-salon treatment is definitely a big factor in this improvement.

Overall, my skin feels great! It is replenished, it almost bounces back and it’s hydrated without being oily or greasy.
