How-to identify and treat nappy rash

For new mums that might not know the telltale signs of nappy rash, here’s what to look for:
The skin around your baby’s genitalia will look red and inflamed
Your baby may be particularly irritable at nappy change time or on contact with bath water
Your bub may be generally more unsettled and irritable than usual
There are many nappy rash creams on the market to choose from. They can be bought from your local supermarket or pharmacy. Some popular ones include Bepanthen, Curash Medicated Nappy Rash Cream and Sudocrem Antiseptic Healing Cream.
If your chosen nappy rash cream doesn’t appear to be healing your baby’s nappy rash within four to five days, ask your local pharmacist to recommend a medicated cream.
Nappy rash can be really painful for babies, especially severe nappy rash, it’s important to keep your baby’s bottom clean and dry.

I know there is a nappy rash cream in the chemist that just doesn't heal the nappy rash but it also kills the bacteria so it prevents it coming back ask the chemist , over the counter ( can't think of the name) or Lucas Pawpaw cream is good.

i used nappymate , a few years ago and it was great. Some friends of mine have occasionally just let their munchkins bottoms be exposed to the air regularly (just don't let the bub get cold, babies are not yet adapted to regulate their body temperature). Sometimes i have heard that applying beaten egg white as a protective barrier does the trick. I think too, try not to use the baby wipes and stick with a good old flannel and plain water. As the baby grows and does more in the nappy then maybe just use sorbolene cream to wipe off the matter. In my books, this has to be better. I never knew about Lucas Pawpaw cream when i had my kids.

As a naturopath, I prefer to use natural based creams, eg vitamin E with a calendula infused oil and perhaps some zinc. And I think about why is bubs getting a rash in the first place- do nappies need changing more regularly, etc.

Dear Platinum Ms, you may be thinking of Junglebrolly HandShield (sold at Chemists). It's a natural barrier cream and remains protecting even with repeated washing and contact with water, therefore it is perfect for nappy rash as it allows the skin to heal and breath naturally

my 18month old hasn't had nappy rash ONCE by doing the following:
-using sorbalene on tissues instead of wipes (unless for poos)
-giving him regular nappy free time
-NOT using talcum powder (my midwife strongly advised against using this on their bottoms as the chemicals & fragrance aren't good for their sensitive skin)
-using bepanthen every few nappy changes as a preventative

My mother in law swears by zinc cream, any cream containing zinc apparently works wonders and apparently that is where Sudocream originally came from.

Where I live has a older chemist and my son kept getting nappy rash really bad. He put us onto resolve (over the counter for tinea) then when the rash went canastan cream to keep it at bay and then a water proofer we loved curash it went on thick and easy. Also he was having alot of apple juice we had to stop this as it was very acidic and was making the problem worse

I would never use Lucas Pawpaw ointment when there is a much kinder option of Pure Nutraceuticals pawpaw ointment which does not contain nasty pertochemicals.

My Daughter had nappy rash constantly. I found besides using Curash cream allowing her to have nappy free time for an hour a day helped keep nappy rash at bay.

One of my twins suffered badly from nappy rash, I found the fastest and most effective treatment was tea tree ointment, and using warm cloths to clean followed by viva paper towels to dry!
