Mothers of all invention

I rate myself pretty highly as a multitasker. I can eyeline, straighten my hair and scoff breakfast in sync. Sometimes while checking my email, and usually while ironing an outfit.
But add a baby bouncing on my hip and I know I'd be sunk. So as I hold my single self together by a thread, I find myself in complete awe of any mother who has not collapsed into a dishevelled heap. How do they do it?
The saying goes that necessity is the mother of all invention, but it seems to me that mothers are the inventors of necessities. Especially in the beauty department.
I know my mum devised a streamlined system that could get her chic and sleek faster than I could mash a banana into the carpet. And some of her sharpest moves were in the shower. She'd customise her own two-in-one treatments by shampooing up top while conditioning only her ends. She'd only use the most moisturising body washes (a post-bathing body lotion was a luxury to be indulged in upon occasions only) and she shaved her legs with hair conditioner for speedy slide-factor and a glossy finish.
But I guess all mums have their own secrets. One of my new-mother friends lays her make-up out in a production line: eyes first (that way if she messes up she won't disturb the rest of her face with remover), then face, then lips. She can do a night look in five minutes. Another wears her bub in a Baby Bjorn while polishing so there are no mid-mani pick-up emergencies. Mums get so clever.
That explains something, I guess, but I remain in awe.
Mothers, you amaze me. And I hope you get some time to be spoilt extra slowly (ie. normal pace for the rest of us) and at your leisure this Sunday. In fact, all of us at Bh wish you a luxuriously happy Mother's Day – one with no timesaving tricks required.

Some of my many tips include:
- shower before bed and go to bed with wet hair, let it dry naturally while I am asleep, then my 'do' only takes 5 minutes with the ghd in the morning...
- so my hair treatment or conditioner can really penetrate with my shower cap on, I clean the shower while I'm showering and then use the that days face towel (a hand towel) to dry the shower screens before I jump out - no mould can grow there seeing it's dry (then the hand towel goes into the laundry basket) amazing time saver, means no labourious shower cleaning once a week...
- after shower slathering feet with body butter/foot cream then pop on bed socks, go to sleep, wake with baby soft tootsies which cuts down on time required to pumice and dealing with dry skin, cracked heels and ugly cuticles...
- also slather on a tonne of hand cream before going to sleep, wake up with soft hands and nourished cuticles because I've had 6 hours of undisturbed cream in place (6 hours is usually all I have time for to sleep weeknights and I catch-up on the weekends!)...

Multitasking all the way...sometimes my day is just taken up with the attention of my 1 yr old...especially if shes sick or teething...I do have my routine down pat...but sometimes when you have only had three hours sleep, each night for a week...you have to force yourself to get going...and your brain is just on 'automatic' and 'standby'...but on the up side I love it when the children say 'I love you Mum', and give big cuddles, it makes it all worth while...we do because it's unconditional love and we just adore their little expressions and cute little smiles...you just take each day as it comes and deal with that...I always leave the house 'groomed' no matter what the circumstances and find having children no excuse to end up looking feral...and let yourself down...at least I feel better about myself that I have made the effort if not for myself but for my children...presentation & effort makes all the difference... and helps you take on the world.

i find i put more effort into my appearance than before i had my baby. i think it's important to keep your selfesteem.
i've always been a good multi-tasker but since bub, i swear i have 2 extra sets of hands and my organizational skills are through the roof.
thankyou Tracey for your kind words and thoughts to mums. it is the best 'job' i could ever have wished for.

I was working full time when I had my son and even though he was with me all day (the benefit of working for yourself) the most difficult thing was getting ready in the morning. I think this was the transition for me from high maintenance beauty (the colour contacts, 30 min blowdry and full makeup) to low maintenance beauty (hair cut for minimal fuss, less makeup and just keeping things fresh) still do it today and look back on old pics and think- I had too much time on my hands...definitely overdone!

OMG that's me - baby in one hand, lipstick in the other. hehe :)
I also wash my hair the night before and then towel dry and wait until the morning to straighten it. It's such a time saver and I find that my hair in a better condition because of it.
I like to wear makeup however I try to keep it minimal as possible. I love my powder compact which only takes seconds to apply and if I'm really pressed for time it's so convenient to apply in the car. One light dusting and you're done!

I just want to share this cute little poem that my 5yr old gave to me this morning -
Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leaving finger prints
On furniture and walls.
But everyday I'm growing up
And soon I'll be so tall
That all my little finger prints
Will be hard to recall
So here's a final hand print
You'll remember with a smile
Mother'sDay 2008
When I was a little child -
A little painted hand was printed at the bottom, which I'll treasure forever!
hannah_almond - my day does'nt stop either because its Mothers Day. We clean your rooms because we want it spick & span and want the best for you, because we love you...and don't want you living in a mess, my daughters, they can't understand it either, you will when you become a mother yourself.

my mum is my hero. if i didnt have her i dont know where i would be right now.
She is my councilor when i have a problem, my best friend when im lonely, my personal life guru in all matters boys, my rock to trap me next to a hard place :), my hugging machine when im blue, my i told you so when she is right (wich is most of the time) she annoys the hell out of me when im in one of my moods and gets grumpy when im being silly. We communicate with screaming matches and cry together when movies are sad. We can never go shopping without spending what we shouldnt. and share the same laugh, she was my dad when he wasnt around. and my brother when he moved away. im apart of her and shes apart of me in every way,
And even tho i think im the one giving her grey hairs and making wrinkles apear on her fore head, I always know she loves me. and i cant ask for much more then that. accept maybe $20 for fuel next week :) just kidding mum.
i love ya mum i hope you like the slippers :*

Mothers are amazing people. Multi-tasked and many are undervalued. They are an inspiration to many.
