The beauty of breastfeeding

You know, a lot can be said for the happy hormones that pump around your body when you're breastfeeding. Little things that may have once been cause for concern become insignificant because the health of your bub is far more important than whether your hair's been blow-dried or your nails are perfectly painted.
But when breastfeeding stops, many mums start looking, and feeling, far worse for wear…
My friend Susie is a mess. One day she was stress-free and serene, the next (less than a week later) she was falling apart – anxious, jittery and as far removed from the calm Susie I knew as possible. Had she lost her job? Had her partner run away with the lady from the corner shop?
No. She'd simply stopped breastfeeding and become an emotional timebomb. With crazy hair.
Luckily, I was able to offer poor Susie support through the emotion explosions. While I was pregnant, my midwife warned me that when you wean your little one, the drop in prolactin levels (prolactin being the hormone that stimulates milk production) can cause mood swings. Thankfully, she also assured me the symptoms would wear off with time.
But she didn't warn me about post-breastfeeding fringe frizz. I got it, Susie's got it and half the new mums I know have it – it must be a hormonal thing.
I'll investigate. But in the meantime, I'll just slip Susie my favourite fringe-smoother (I've been using John Frieda's Extra Strength Frizz-Ease Hair Serum by the handful) with a knowing smile. Mums have an unspoken understanding.

I enjoyed breast-feeding while it lasted, it had so many positives...is that true about the finge going frizzy?...well, mine sort of done that, it did'nt go frizzy exactly it just went curly when left to its own devices...hormones play a big role with everything, its goes to show how much impact they have on the whole body.

I have a daughter a little over one and I'm currently in the process of weaning her off from breastfeeding. As the feeds have decreased I've started to recently notice my hormones to be a little out of whack or probably my body is returning back to it's old self. I can relate to your friend Susie as I don't feel myself at times and my hair is shedding like there is no tomorow with my hair clogging the bathroom sink and I'm forever vacuuming hair off the carpet. My skin has recently experienced some breakouts too :(

Im not looking forward to breastfeeding when i have kids. So many horror stories of weening and my mother not producing enough milk whereas my grandmother producing too much. Its stressful just thinking about it!

Spiteful - its not all that bad really, (your only taking note of all the horror stories), if it was that bad, no-one would be breastfeeding at all. You just have to experience yourself to pass judgement...and I bet you'd be pleasantly surprised.

To me the pros far outweighed the cons but it's a personal choice to make. the most important thing is the health of you and the health of your baby :)

Spiteful, it's not so hard - the midwives and health centre nurse told me that as long as you get bubs used to taking a bottle by 6 weeks old, it's easy - I did that with expressed breastmilk which I'm sure the other mums here did too and it was a piece of cake - we didn't have any problems at all weaning... ;)

I did that too in the beginning glamourcat and it worked out well and then one day my daughter just didn't want to have a bar of the bottle. She would take the bottle from her dad or other people but knew that I could feed her by other means. I could of been more persistent. If I ever have another child I will have learnt from my mistakes from the first.

I think breastfeeding was wonderful, never will you feel so close to your baby, but I grew tired of hearing everyones opinions on how often I should feed, where and when I should stop. Its such a personal thing.

As with most things in life, people tend to highlight the negatives more than they do the positives so please don't be put off Spiteful. Breastfeeding is very personal and you have to do what feels right for you. However, if you can make it work for you and your baby it's such a wonderful thing. I've just stopped breastfeeding my 7-month old bub and I'm so looking forward to the next time round.

I didn't have any problems by not breastfeeding. I lost all of my pregnancy weight and more. Both me and my little one were happy, and he's just turned one and I have had no problems taking him off the bottle.

hannah_almond - you may have mood changes whether you breastfeed or not. Your hormones can be all over the place. Not trying to scare anyone! Bottle or breast - there are benefits to both :)

I had no idea about the post-breast feeding frizz...something to definitely be mindful of when that time comes!

Breastfeeding wasnt an issue, i did get the frizz, but i got horrible hair that wouldnt take colour, nails that grew incredibly (and were oily so no more nail polish :( ) and the 'wonderful' moodswings. But with my littlest now two that has all pretty much evened out!
Even with all the beauty down sides, its well worth it! i love my kids, and quite often I have them 'helping' to do makeup, and they are as good with sunscreen and styling products as I am! hehehehe

i bottle fed my bubba. after my ceasarean, my milk didn't come in as my body used all it's energy trying to heal. he got colostrum for the first 3 days but i don't feel bad or guilty because i look at him and see how healthy and beautiful he is and know it was the right thing for him and me.
i guess another positive is that my hair didn't change much, hehehehe

Shouldn't really focus on the bad things, bad things come with basically everything so you just take them as they come.
Your love for your baby will over power any annoyance you have with breastfeeding or being a mother in general.
