To pump or not to pump

Urban myth or trusty fact: you should never ‘pump’ the mascara wand in and out of the tube.
According to beautyheaven expert Cassandra Rae Ferguson it’s very much a trusty fact. The action could spell death for your favourite mascara.
As she explains: “True, this isn’t recommended. Doing so pushes air into the tube, hence drying out the mascara and increasing the risk of bacteria getting in. A more effective way of getting mascara onto the brush, is turning the wand inside the tube, and then gently pulling it out.”
Also not advisable…
Sharing (not because we condone being mean) but because mascara is “a breeding ground for bacteria” don’t you know. Which is why adding water to mascara isn’t wise either. Kind of gross but very useful info to have under your belt.

I always look after my makeup items. I put so much time and effort not to mention money into getting these gems. I like to look after my ever growing collection, mascaras included. Mascara would have to be the most fickle of all beauty products out there. So easily damaged and so many problems can arise when you misuse them. Mascara also has the shortest shelf life.

Great tip Bh. The Lancome Osciallation mascara sounds quite promising, I would love to get it a shot. The trial team loved it, I am sure I will love it too.

I was told years ago by my aunty who was a Nutri-metics consultant to never pump your mascara - plus you need to replace them on a fairly regular basis. Which is why I never spend more than $20 on a mascara!

could you add a drop of sterile water? Like water for injection? Does anyone know what that does to the consistency of the mascara

Thanks for the useful tips. I must admit I learned long ago never to pump or share! Must have been drummed into me while reading Cosmo or Cleo for years! I'd never heard of people adding water to their mascara!?! Do people actually do this?

i always pump my mascara... bc i like it when its a bit thicker, makes my eyelashes soo much thicker that way, but sometimes i go overboard and its already time to buy a new one.
i've never shared any type of makeup with anyone, just more hygenic that way... and putting water into mascara??? thats the first ive heard of that
