Make-up masterclass

I get asked a LOT of questions about make-up. Seriously, at least 40 questions per day, and that’s if it’s quiet. So I’m dedicating today’s blog to answering some of them with some handy hints from BECCA founder and make-up maestro, Rebecca Morris Williams.
I have brown hair and my eyes are green / brown, which colour eyeshadow should I use? – Melissa, QLD
The best general colour combinations for green and green / brown eyes are warm tones of bronzy brown and earthy olive, beige and khaki tones. Burgundy, violet, eggplant and russet tones will intensify the green and can look striking. Stay away from gold or yellowy tones; these are better suited to blue eyes.
I have vitiligo on my face. It’s currently just around the eye area and I have lightly tanned skin so it is not noticeable too much but I would love to find the right make-up / expertise to help blend away the whiteness. Can you offer me any tips? – Vanessa, NSW
A highly pigmented concealer will really help disguise the whiteness. BECCA Compact Concealer has around 50 per cent pigment so it is great for covering almost anything and with 34 colours available you can find your perfect match.
I have dark pigmented lips, is there anyway to disguise it? – Laila, VIC
Try a touch of concealer before applying gloss or lipstick. BECCA Nude Liner has one end that is like a concealer for reducing colour on the outside of the lips but it can be used to reduce colour in the lips.
I have fine facial hair and I’m trying to find the best make-up that doesn't show it up, help! – Vicki, VIC
Most make-up is really going to accentuate facial hair, particularly anything with a lot of pigment. You would be best to choose a super sheer formulation such as a tint. BECCA Luminous Skin Colour is a very sheer foundation/tinted moisturiser and BECCA Beach Tint is a sheer colour tint for cheeks and lips, these would work with a light setting of loose powder.
I never wear foundation as I hate the cakey feel of it on my face but recently I’ve started to get quite a lot of blackheads on my nose and chin so am looking for something to help cover them without making my face appear caked, what would you suggest? – Natalie, NSW
A pigmented concealer with a slightly dry consistency, applied only to the areas of your face that you feel need a little disguising will help. Try BECCA Compact Concealer which is great for covering but feels weightless and does not cake.

What’s the one thing about make-up that stumps you?

I have yet to master eyeliner, whether liquid, gel or crayon. So jealous of women who can do that winged eyeliner look! I also wish I was better at buffing and blending my foundation, bronzer and/or blush to get that natural, flawless finish. Its all about learning the application techniques and finding suitable products and shades to suit my skin tone and texture. Great tips, thanks Sarah and Becca.

I never know how to best line my eyes either. I have had a couple of SA's try, but lining under my eye on the inside comes off. I think I need a professional to help me like Napoleon Perdis or Nigel Stanislaus.

Good questions and simple and easy to follow answers! Practice makes perfect, so I just keep on trying until I'm happy. And that also means I get to try new stuff all the time. Tee hee.

Eyeliner just looks totally wrong on me, so I avoid it altogether.

I can't do lipstick properly; I have massive lips and lipstick always seems to look a little ridiculous on me! Maybe I'm choosing the wrong colours? I always look like I've gone over the lipline hehe like a 5yr old.
Maybe I'll just stick to my gloss for now :)

How to cover up my dark circles without getting that cakey texture that accentuates fine lines around my eyes! PS bh girls I saw your TV debut on ACA last night... I got so excited that I'm "in the know" by being a part of this wonderful website. Well done ladies!

I agree with others that it would be great to have some more tips and info on eye makeup i.e. determining suitable eye shadow shades, concealing circles and effects and uses of different liners etc. I enjoy trying out eye makeup, but I'm not confident about what would suit me.

um, i never seem to be able to match my foundation right . but i have had to teach my self that which ever colour i think i am , always buy the shade lighter , because i have always come home with the shade , just a little to dark .
took me ages to learn that . *self dicipline* now is all i need lol
i have some similar issues , im thinking about getting the Becca beach tint , lip liner :) goes bargin hunting !

I'd like to know how to use bronzer. I just can't get it to "work" for me. I'd also like to learn how to contour as well.

I find putting pencil eyeliner across the lid of my eye impossible. I can kind of do wings, but it takes a lot of pulling at the skin and tries to get them perfect (and even).
Also, I find concealer to cover up dark eye circles horrible. It turns out all blotchy in three seconds because there is such high movement around that area. Foundation works better.

blush stumps me. its hard to know what colours are best without making me look like a lollypop. however, i have just started using blush agian recently and having good fun trying different colours and they can always double as eyeshadows when you get mineral ones.
