How-to: find a lipstick in your 50s

Women who are 50+ want something different from their cosmetics than a woman who is in her 20s – and this is also true when it comes to lipstick.
When you’re 50+, there are a couple of dos and don’ts that one should keep in mind when on the hunt for the perfect lipstick. We called on Make-Up Artist, Nicola Burford, to provide us with a few tips…
- The best lipsticks to look for are those with a satin or creamy texture, as these flatter a more mature skin.
- Colours with too much of a ‘blue’ undertone will flatten and ‘deaden’ the look of the lip. So choose warmer lipsticks with mid-strength colouring as these will ensure your lips look fresh, young and lively without being overpowering.
- Likewise, colours that are too dark don’t tend to suit more mature skin tones.
- Try to avoid sheer or really glossy textured lipsticks as they have a tendency to ‘bleed’ into the lines and wrinkles around the lips.

Good idea to classify lipsticks into age groups as people cannot wear in their fifties what they did in their twenties.

Mature women do need some sort of colour, but finding a good colour can sometimes be impossible. For my mum, i love using warm tones and rich berry shades. Nothing too matte or shimmery and definitely nothing frosted.

Being a mature age, I have to agree that frosted lipsticks don't suit older lips. I have found that as I get older my lipstick choices have changed to slightly more subtle shades with enough colour to highlight but not too bright. Keeping the lips well moisterised helps too.

Thanks for that very interesting as i am in that age bracket and finding that i am experimenting with all my makeup changes from going from darker to lighter from eyes to lips takes some getting used to .

Thanks for this. I've started really looking at my makeup and what's in my bags and it's interesting that something that looked fine a few years ago is definitely not OK now.

I think a woman can rock whatever she likes & feels confident in.
These lipstick rules are definitely made to be broken!

Have once worked selling cosmetics, I have found it is sometimes hard to convince more mature ladies (I am one now) to use more flattering colours. They tend to continue to buy similar colours to those they wore in their twenties. My own choices have changed as my hair and skin becomes lighter giving a gentler and softer look. Can't stop the wrinkles but can enhance the better bits.

I find it hard to find a lipstick that stays on, those long wear ones do tend to become quite dry, even when using the gloss or whatever comes with it. So maybe a nice lipstick for 1 hour is better than none at all?!
