Top tips for red lips

If you’re planning to paint the town this party season, what better colour to do it with than a bright shade of crimson?

A rich, red lip is the perfect partner for that new little party dress, plus it will take your look from safe to sexy in no time. So check out some of the tips and tricks you should keep in mind when you want to wear a rocking red lip that stays put…

  • - Line up. To ensure your lip colour stays in place for longer, be sure to line your lips with a similar colour to your lipstick. Then fill in the area with the same colour to ensure that even if your lipstick fades, your lip liner remains as a stain.
  • - Wear layers. The most effective way to ensure your lipstick stays put is to apply it in layers to make it more adhesive to the lip. Apply the first layer then blot off the excess with a tissue and repeat twice more.
  • - Go the gloss. If you really want a scarlet lip that screams party-ready, simply load up your lips with a nourishing clear gloss. This will help to prevent the colour flaking off too. We like Lip Smacker® Jellies - not only are they ultra-glossy, but they smell and taste delish too!
  • - Powder finish. Another way to set your shade in stone is to dust a little translucent powder over the top and apply a second coat. No telltale marks on your champagne glass – yippee!

Definitely everything in your video Liv on layering your lipstick as there is nothing worse than a faded or blotchy red lip. I also use a wax liner from The Body Shop to prevent any feathering or bleeding and then I am good to go and confident all day that my lippie isn't going anywhere!

My tip is blotting your lips during application so the excess is removed, and the colour is pressed into the lip. Maybelline 24 hour superstay lipstick really does last hours! It just doesn't budge.

Agreed - layering, blotting and translucent powder is the only way to go for long-lasting lipstick that isn't drying. I also start with a thin layer of face primer, and a touch of matte foundation before I begin adding colour, any colour :-)

Blotting in between and liner are a must. I also dust with powder otherwise I find some red puppy can make its way not only onto glasses but also my teeth, never a good look.

I start with a Lancome lip primer, which really seems to work. Then a tiny bit of foundation before I line the lips, and fill them in with the liner, then a coat of lippie, blot - and I must admit that I only blot once, then add another coat of lippie, then powder, and finaly gloss....

I'm always so nervous applying red lippy - it can be so unforgiving. Am going to be brave and use these great tips tonight....but first must hit the cosmetic counters and find the right shade of red!!!

I'm wearing red lips today but haven't followed any of this advice! It was just a quick swipe before I ran out the door meaning many many many reapplications will be done throughout the day!

I also apply the red lip colour with a brush to get in the grooves of my lips, also a lighter shade of Red on the middle of my bottom lip.

Totally agree about the layering!! I used to just swipe it on and then wonder why it never lasted and transferred so easily. Now I dab it on quite heavily and then blot most of it away and then lightly dab on again and blot twice more - the colour is great and it lasts all day :)

I've been getting into bright lippies esp orange/reds. Sometimes for longer lasting power, I apply my Revlon Just Bitten lipstick as the base and layer on my fave lippy.

Pick a shade that complements your complexion - are you a blue based or orange based red? I tend to best suit blue based reds. xxx [some red lipstick kisses to all Beauties ; ) ]

Great tips, especially the one about translucent powder before applying a second layer to avoid getting lipstick on your glass etc.! I hope it works with non-matte lipstick (I have a true blood/crimson one I was planning to wear)...

Thanks for the tips. I think that red lips don't always suit everyone (including me) but I like to mix red with another colour like peach to tone it down and better suit my pale skin.
