Avoid the gloss glop

Gloppy gloss. Is there anything worse? Well yes, there’s un-brushed brows and crackly mascara – but that’s a whole other blog…
Is the pigment in your gloss different to the shade that shows up on your lips? Yeah, that happens sometimes. You need to think of applying gloss to your lips like applying polish to your nails. Sometimes the first layer is just a little too sheer, and a second coat is needed to get a hue that packs a punch.
Take note: don’t just recklessly layer up. If you proceed with a second coat too soon, you’ll end up with a similar gloopy mess to when you apply a second coat of polish before the first is completely touch-dry.
The solution? Apply one coat of gloss and if that’s too sheer, just wait. After about 30 seconds, take a lip brush (or your finger) to the gloss and dab colour over the first layer. It’s important not to swipe the gloss straight over your lips a second time, as it will either rub the first layer straight off or look just like the image above - and you don’t want that… uhhh.

What's your best trick to apply a flawless coat of gloss?

For myself I add gloss only to the middle of my bottom lip because my gloss bleeds badly. When I do make-overs I start from the bottom middle of the lip and spread out from there. I do apply a thin layer, wait a bit then apply again over the top. I'm loving the look of a neutral lipstick with clear gloss over the top. It's okay for those girls whose gloss doesn't bleed to smack the lips together as it allows the gloss to evenly spread out. But for those unfortunate girls like myself, don't do this, it's a disaster. Just in the middle of bottom lip it looks sexy, gives a bigger pout and no clown face effect.

I usually apply lip liner with my gloss and then 1 coat only. I will definitely try "patting" on a second coat. *runs off to try*

I'm not much of a lipgloss girl because I dislike the feeling of it. But some good tips in there. I've heard that if you feel like you've applied too much gloss or lipstick, stick your (clean!) finger in your mouth, close your lips and pull your finger out. Sounds gross but it gets rid of the excess gloss.

She's definitely overdone it in the pic!! I tend to just quickly whack one layer on only and that always turns out okay for me. I've actually never heard of two coats of lip gloss!

The photo is just yuk! Very good visual of the problem.
I use a clear gloss over lippy so there's no clash of colours. I didn't know about the waiting to apply a second coat. I usually just apply a second coat when it feels like the first one has worn off a few hours down the track. Glad for the tip. Great info, Olivia.

I've never heard of 2 layers of lip gloss also. I normally just use a bit of lippie or lip stain then put on one thin layer of lip gloss and off I go.

I tend to wear gloss for day wear and lipstick at night for a bolder look. For day gloss is sheer, light but I only ever wear one coat to avoid gloopiness.

Great tips, Liv! I usually only apply one layer of gloss, if I want more colour I'll use a lip brush to add some lipstick. I also often apply gloss over lipstick. : )

I ensure that I always have a light/thin base coat either a small layer of vaseline or nivea repair and protection. This means that my gloss doesn't show up cracks in my lips.
I also pop my finger in my mouth (i don't slide it in) I only slide my finger out while making an "oooo" face so that when I smile and talk I don't have the "gloss together lips".
I always apply my gloss with a lip brush and not the one from the gloss tube, it always provides a smoother application.

That's what I do! I love the subtle sheer and hint of colour!
The worse which I always get is the flaky bits of mascara under my eyes! urgh so annoying.
I try to wipe it away with my fingers!

great tip, I only ever apply one coat, will try this trick. whenever i do my lips i also put on a balm first and wait, i guess this is the same concept. otherwise to get more colour i wear a lipstick under the gloss.

I apply one coat with lip liner sometimes too and its like the rule for applying blush, start off abit at a time. It's better to add than remove.

Great tip, thanks Olivia, I never thought of using my lip brush for applying gloss as well. I have recently gotten a great NP lip brush so this will be a great opportunity for me to give it a gloss test drive ;) If I like the results looks like I will be in the market for another lip brush that I can use solely for glosses, keeping my current one for the lipsticks that I intended to use it for :)

I like to use my favourite lipstick shade then accentuate with a hit of gloss, I have always failed gloss class when it comes to gloss only applications.

I only apply one coat as it's always a bit too runny even I go crazy with it...I mostly put it in the middle and then try and spread it out carefully. I only like a little bit a gloss, I can't stand it how some people apply it so much that it looks like they're drooling... *shudders*
