Neck up

My mother always said, “Olivia! Your skin doesn’t end at your jaw line – you must, must blend your foundation down to your neck!”
Sheesh mum. Okay, okay! Although I thought her words to be a little harsh way back when, I value her butting in – big time. It’s saved me from many a potentially embarrassing make-up faux pas – and I must say, I can’t help but cringe a little when I see a young girl walking down the street with foundation two shades too dark, that stands out against her lily white neck. Blend my girl – blend!
The stickler is, sometimes women are begrudged to waste any of the beige stuff on their bods – and fair enough. Which is why you needn’t go all the way down to where your neck meets your chest. Simply take your foundation to just under your chin and lightly move it downwards so that it blends and ‘disappears’ into your skin. (But take care not to tug – that skin is delicate!)
After that, you can brush some loose powder down your neck and around your jaw line to set, and look forward to looking way more natural and not as ‘mask-like.’

Are you guilty of not being a vigilant blender?

On occasion yes, unfortunately. But I always use loose powder over my liquid to blend my foundation below my jawline.

Yes I can be guilty on not blending my foundation at my jawline- really embarrassing when someone spots it at uni or work, makes me think how weird i look on the bus ride, with an unblended jawline exposed!

Definitely. For pictures do not forget to apply foundation on ears as well.

I try really hard not to be guilty of that. I think I usually do pretty well, because it's one of those things I'm really paranoid about.

i try hard not to be one of those ppl coz i do hate it when i see girls like that out in the streets but sometimes because i am so white when i wear foundation it can look strange against my white upper chest and neck.. i just brush a bit of loose mineral foundation ...

I don't apply foundation down to my jaw line. I apply it to my upper cheeks and blend it down so it disappears into my jawline.

I find this tricky, and I often have to put foundation on my neck, because, although my face is very fair, my neck is virtually white, so that even without any makeup, my face is darker than my neck.

That information is correct. That was what I was taught when I got my makeup certificate in terms of blending although if I'm in a hurry I'm not so particular.

I love foundation application and I am really good at it. Had heaps of practice though as I am in the industry and have been for nearly 20 years. Another trick is using bronzer with a powder brush in that front part of the neck where lots of women are white, it's amazing how perfect it blends and a good foundation brush is key to a perfect foundation application, I love Manicare for their brushes.

I don't just blend to the neck, I do full makeup to the edge of my bra, including contouring and highlighting to enhance my cleavage. The catch is that the face needs to be darker than the neck and decolette because it's further forward and more prominent. If you do the neck in the same foundation as the face, you'll end up making your neck look too dark and adding to the mask effect. I've done it, and have the photos to prove it!
I'd suggest taking your face foundation colour to the little indentation that runs around the underside of the jaw, then blend a slightly paler shade down onto the neck.

I am awful and I know that I do it.
I just get nervous about it getting on my clothes and nothing worse than make up on the collar!

I can be slack sometimes too and forget about the neck. But I had this huge disaster the other week so from now on I'm definitely on the look out for colour differences.

I'm guilty at cringing at girls who don't blend! Especially in photos with a strong flash! I am really careful about this and make sure that any skin showing will not reflect different tones.
