Matching foundation

Foundation is a tricky little thing, but sadly, for most of us, it’s an essential part of the make-up routine as we endeavour to hide blemishes, uneven skin tone and the like.
Given this, we called up Rae Morris, bh’s go-to-girl for make-up woes, for a little advice on matching foundation. Morris said:
“Never match foundation on your jaw line as most people think, it’s important to match foundation to your chest area.” The reason for this, Morris explains is, “your body is the same colour as your face whereas your neck is the palest part of your body,” hence you’re going to get a better match if you stick to your chest area.
Also, if you’re a fake tanner, Morris warns to make sure you have two or three varieties of foundation available so that you can adjust your shade to match. It sounds simple but you’d be surprised by how many people don’t go a few shades darker to match their newly-bronzed tone.
Bh’s foundation picks:
L'Oreal Paris Infallible Foundation – this has ultra-resistant pigments that provide optimal coverage and even out skin tone. The pigments are resistant to perspiration and sebum so foundation stays put.
BECCA Stick Foundation – this non-powdery formulation is suitable for even ultra-sensitive skin. It provides sheer to medium, natural-looking coverage with the added benefit of SPF 30+.
Dermalogica Treatment Foundation – this lightweight, oil-free, water-based liquid make-up provides flawless coverage while moisturising and protecting the skin. It provides excellent coverage that can be adjusted from sheer to concealing.

Great article I love everything about foundation and am always intersted in trying something new. I would always prefer a foundation to be darker rather than lighter, nothing worst than looking like a ghost, lol.

It's hard to find foundation light enough for my skin. A lot of brands lightest shade are still too dark....

I have just finished reading Rae's book "Make Up" and if you haven't read it, it is a must. It has a wealth of info and the photography is just divine.

Thanks for the tips Rae and BH. Foundation is a must for me. I'm on an endless and rather expensive quest to find products that suit me. I currently have three or four in rotation depending on my skin's needs and the day's planned activities! High SPF is also essential. Typically, its a mineral power in summer and a hydrating foundation in winter.
Yes, I also came across Rae's book in the library last week. I was attracted to it by the gorgeous photos! She is such a talented makeup artist. Her book provides step by step photos and tips to make adopting her basic techniques sound achieveable. I especially found her info on her tools of the trade useful. Since looking at her body of work, I have a new found respect for Rae and her recommendations. I'm so glad she's contributing to BH! Well Done, Rae!
P.S. I loved the story about how you became a makeup artist thanks to Naomi Campbell and the paps! Lol!

Fabulous article, my experience with foundation came from the girls in store who matched my complexion through 2 blending powders to create the desired look. I think they must be bh beauty divas or perhaps read Rae's Make Up book!

That is very interesting, i have heard so much that people should match their foundation to their jawline but i guess everyone has different techniques? But thinking logically, i guess it is true, thanks for the tip though! I'll keep that in mind. (;

I find the hardest thing about matching foundation can be finding the right brand to use as they all differ when it comes to their foundation shades. Some are more yellow based, some pink based and sometimes I'll fall right in the middle of two colours. I guess the best idea is to buy a couple of colours and custom blend, easier with powder, but I just can't be bothered.

This is a great addition to the 'how to find foundation' articles I've been collecting. Even now I have doubts about which colours to choose.

MAC's face and body foundation is the bomb...It's perfect for me, just the right amount of coverage and just a couple of drops gives me an even, dewy complexion
