Make-up school 101

I love make-up and like to think that I can make up a face that’s somewhat acceptable to take out in public. How did I learn these basic make up skills? To be honest, it’s a combination of lots of tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years, from websites, magazines, girlfriends, and from watching my mum ‘put on her face’. But am I actually doing it properly?

When I landed this amazing gig working at beautyheaven my wonderful husband thought he’d help out and arm me with some make-up knowledge to give me a leg up in the job. So for my birthday he bought me a three-hour make-up lesson at Gorgeous Cosmetics (worth $150). After a quick moment of wondering if I should be offended (does he think I’m terrible at putting on make-up?), I was then overjoyed. While picking up techniques over time has been great, now I was getting the opportunity to learn from professionals – wowser, get me there now!

I had my three-hour one-on-one session with the lovely Carla at the Sydney City Gorgeous Cosmetics store. The great thing about the lesson is that it’s hands on. Carla demonstrated techniques on one side of my face, and then I had to use these techniques on the other side. Rest assured I didn’t come out looking half man half woman – it actually looked natural, as under the guidance of an expert how can you go wrong? Carla talked me through colour palettes, brushes 101, and the importance of primer, all the while getting to understand the best colours and ways to use make-up for me.

And they save the best part until the very end, with the cost of make-up school fully redeemable on product! So not only did I walk out of there with a face ready made up and a brain bursting with make-up knowledge, but I also picked a bag full of goodies. I was able to pick products that I knew worked with my skin tone and that I knew how to apply – what more could a girl ask for?

Dying to give the Gorgeous Cosmetics make-up lesson a go?
